Sullivan whistleblower appeals dismissal

MONTICELLO, NY — David Sager, the manager of the Village of Monticello, is appealing the dismissal of the whistleblower lawsuit he filed against the Sullivan County Division of Family Services (DFS).

Before he was hired for his present position, he was a deputy commissioner with DFS. He was fired by the controversial commissioner Randy Parker for reasons not made known to the public.

Sager’s attorney, Michael Sussman, held a news conference at the time and said Sager’s termination was due at least in part to the fact that he had criticized DFS attorney Colleen Cunningham and other department lawyers over failure to investigate or properly handle child-abuse cases.

The Sullivan County Supreme Court ruled that his lawsuit could not go forward because it had not been filed in a timely manner, and that decision was upheld by the appellate division of the Supreme Court. Sager has now appealed that decision to the New York State Court of Appeals, the state’s highest court.

Parker was later fired from his position.
