Liberty man gets 10 years for assaulting parents

MONTICELLO, NY — A 44-year-old Liberty man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for assaulting his elderly parents. Michael Fedderman received the sentence on May 12 in Sullivan County Supreme Court after pleading guilty to felony charges related to two separate assaults on his parents, but District Attorney Jim Farrell indicated in a press release that the abuse was actually ongoing.

Farrell said, “Domestic violence, whether suffered by domestic partners or by family members, is a serious crime and must be treated as such. The collateral consequences to the survivors are enormous, and our criminal justice system needs to be vigilant to make sure that justice is pursued in each case. In this case, which involved years of physical abuse to his own family—his mother, his father, his brother—the sentence imposed holds him accountable and will ensure that for the next decade he will not harm anyone. This case was particularly troubling as it involved elder abuse, and my office and law enforcement partners are committed to holding those who commit this type of crime accountable.”

Fedderman also pled guilty to endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person, a felony, for the endangerment of another family member during a physical altercation with his mother. Fedderman was arrested after an investigation by the New York State Police and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation for their investigation into the crimes that occurred.

After serving the prison sentence, Fedderman will be subject to five years of post-release supervision.
