WHITE LAKE, NY — Two people were arrested on December 2 for ingesting heroin before going into the Dunkin Donuts shop in White Lake.
At about 10 a.m., the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office got a call about two suspicious people at the donut shop on State Route 17B. The caller said that a young child was in the company of an adult man and woman who appeared to be nodding off in the shop.
When the patrol arrived, the subjects had left the store and were in a pickup truck getting ready to leave. Police questioned the two and determined that both the driver, Cristina Szewczyk, age 39, and the passenger, Steve Wood, age 30, both of Poughkeepsie, had ingested heroin via snorting before they arrived at the scene.
Szewczyk’s six-year-old niece was a passenger in the vehicle.
Szewczyk was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, a felony under Leandra’s Law, and also with endangering the welfare of a child. Steve Wood was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
Wood was also wanted on a petit larceny warrant issued by the Horry County Sheriff’s Office in South Carolina. Both subjects were arraigned before Town of Bethel Judge Cindy Barber and released on their own recognizance pending a future court appearance.
The six-year-old child was returned to her parents and was unharmed.
