Hawley Borough recognizes contributions of local businesses

HAWLEY, PA — Jim Shook and John Rowles wondered why their presence had been requested at the monthly board meeting, but the reason soon became clear. Both were presented with plaques acknowledging the outstanding contributions their companies, the Lake Region IGA and Eastern Propane, made to the success of the National Night Out event. Shook’s contributions to the Memorial Day parade, Halloween functions and other events were also acknowledged. Shook commented that Hawley is his hometown and that everyone benefits when all work together. Mayor Kevin Hawk and police chief Daniel Drake made the presentations on behalf of the council.

In other business, the council acknowledged with gratitude the contributions by individuals and local businesses to the improvements in the town’s park, specifically the toddler playground. Parks and Recreation liaison Mike Dougherty reported that H&K Quarry contributed four times the material originally anticipated to be needed as well as services to install the material. A $400 expenditure for automatic shut-off faucets in the park bathrooms was approved.

The Hawley Fire Department received a $7,100 grant from the PA Bureau of Forestry and will apply these funds toward the purchase of brush-cutting equipment.

A local business owner queried the council about the possibility of installing surveillance cameras in the business district. Her shop was recently burglarized. The state police responded to the 911 call because the local police were not on duty at the time of the call. Chief Drake stated that the local police should also be contacted as soon as possible, because their knowledge of the community can be engaged more quickly.

Joe Faubel reported that a budget workshop will be held on October 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Borough Hall.

The County Redevelopment Authority notified council president Ann Monaghan that Maple Avenue won’t be paved this autumn. The council will readdress this need in the spring.

Michelle Rojas urged the public to respond to the community survey, the results of which will be incorporated in the comprehensive plan update. The survey helps to define what is of importance to the community as the council plans for the future. The survey can be obtained at the borough office.
