ELDRED, NY — Eldred Junior/Senior High School recently inducted its first members to its newly formed chapter of the National Art Honor Society.

Catherine Nicholson, Alyssa McGrail, Kasey Wyss, Laurie Stern, Olivia Shultis and Isabella Pizzo all met the requirements to receive this high honor of artistic achievement set forth by the National Arts Education Association.

A formal application was needed for each inductee. Students had to meet the following criteria to be granted membership: maintain a 90% average in advanced art classes; be enrolled in at least one advanced-level art elective; have an overall grade-point average above 80; have no more than five school absences during any one marking period; and pledge to complete at least 15 hours of community service.

The Eldred chapter’s sponsor, art teacher Jennifer Powell, believes art is one of the most important lessons in a young student’s life. “Not only does it offer a new perspective on how to view the world and what we can give back to our communities, but it also teaches students how to think outside the box,” Powell said. “Visual learning, inventiveness, decision making and motor skills are just a few of the important pieces that students develop while enrolled in an art class, along with cultural awareness and giving back to the community.”

The students are designing a portable mural as part of their community service requirement.

There will be a second induction in June to welcome additional new members.
