Dam roadway is 'a crying shame'

GLEN SPEY, NY — “It makes my heart leap,” Sharon Sparling said of the panoramic view from the roadway across Rio Dam. As a realtor, she felt the dam crossing was the most spectacular gateway to introduce clients to Lumberland. But in recent years, she said, the maintenance of the lightly used roadway has turned it into an embarrassment. In October, she told the town board at the town meeting about holes in the ground, bare, rusting re-bars jutting out and black mold in roadway sidewalls. “It’s an eyesore,” she said. With its owners, Eagle Creek Renewable Energy, expected to come before the town during the application process for its 2022 operating permit renewal, Sparling said Lumberland should “put them on notice to fix before renewal time.” Attorney for the town Danielle Jose-Decker said she would contact the power company’s counsel about the complaint.
