Blessing guests invited to bring assault rifles

NEWFOUNDLAND, PA — Hyung Jin Moon is considered by his 250 or so followers to be the earthly representative of Sun Myung Moon, his father and the cult leader of the Worldwide Unification Church, who passed away in 2012. The church considered Sun to be the Messiah, and he and his wife, Hak Ja Han, were called by followers “True Parents.” His businesses and other enterprises were worth billions of dollars.

Before Sun passed away he designated Hyung to be his replacement. Once Sun passed according to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a power struggle broke out between Hyung and his mother, and he was asked to step down. He then moved to Wayne County with his wife, Yeonah Lee Moon, and started the World Peace and Unification Sanctuary in Newfoundland.

As part of continuing his father’s work, Hyung plans to bless a number of couples on February 28, and he has invited participants to bring assault rifles to the event. A press release on his website reads “On February 28, all brothers and sisters who believe that True Father Sun Myung Moon is the Messiah and that Hyung Jin Moon is his representative and heir in the physical world who has inherited the True Parents’ authority and preserves the words and practices established by True Father, are invited to participate in an [sic] historic Perfection Stage Book of Life Registration Blessing that True Father promised.

“Blessed couples are requested to bring the accouterments of the nation of Cheon Il Guk [God’s Kingdom], crowns representing the sovereignty of Kings and Queens, and a ‘rod of iron,’” designated by the Second King [Hyung] as an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle or equivalents such as an AK semiautomatic rifle, representing both the intent and the ability to defend one’s family, community and “nation of Cheon Il Guk.”

If, however, participants are not able to purchase assault rifles because of various laws, “couples are invited to purchase a $700 gift certificate from a gun store, as evidence of their intent to purchase a ‘rod of iron’ in the future,” and the certificate will allow the bearer entry into a “color guard ceremony in the presence of the King.”

The SPLC says the guns are needed to advance the church’s mission. From the church’s writings: “To fulfill the ideal of kingship and the nation, we need people, land (property) and sovereignty. Sovereignty means that we are able to defend ourselves against an aggressive satanic world, when we are threatened.”

The affinity with assault rifles is not the church’s only unique feature. It also frequently preaches about the evils of homosexuality. During a Facebook interview, Hyung spoke to his guest about school children in the United States, and he said, “They’re not only going to learn the actual required course load, they’re getting indoctrinated into the homosexual political agenda, they’re getting indoctrinated in the transgender agenda saying that their emotions, that they can choose how they feel based on how they feel their gender, which is totally against the Bible.”

The guest in this interview, which ran on the Youtube channel “The King’s Report” on January 10, was Paul Mango, a conservative candidate running to become the governor of Pennsylvania this year.

Mango responded in part, “You are talking about all these important social conservative values that should be re-installed in school, and I agree with you.” [See related letter page 6.]
