Unaccompanied immigrant children

Since October, over 50,000 unaccompanied children have been picked up on our Southern border, most of them attempting to escape rampant gang violence in three Central American countries.

The question about what to do with these children has been posed over and over again. Despite the continued debate regarding appropriate solutions, Congress has not acted to insure the humane treatment of these youngsters. Instead of shouting and screaming at them, or pointing loaded firearms in their direction, one idea may be perhaps a simple resolution offering each of these children a chance to make a case to an immigration judge about their situation.

Of course, the Republican leaders of the House of Representatives are holding these children hostage while the house members are enjoying a well deserved month-long vacation, in that they have worked so hard on important legislation this year. If you believe that, I have a bridge for sale at a bargain price. However, before you send me the down payment, send a quick note to your representatives reminding them about the upcoming November elections.

Lastly, I agree with Gov. Martin O’Malley of Maryland when he said, “The greatest power we have as a people is the power of our principles, and we should not send these kids back without a chance for them to make a case that they fled their country from fear of violence.”
