Making choices in local politics

Posted

As life-long residents of the Town of Callicoon, my family has always been keenly interested in local politics and the impact of elections on the prosperity of our community.

Ultimately, elections should be less about the candidates and more about the people they serve. Candidates are elected because their constituents truly believe they are either the best man or woman to represent their views on significant issues. As voters, we must assess each candidate’s perspective on those issues and carefully consider their qualifications, experience and ability to lead. Certainly, how well the candidates effectively communicate with other community members, who might hold divergent views on prevailing issues, is another key factor. Though this may appear to be rather subjective, it is the political process we value, and it is precisely why we choose to participate and cast our vote.

At a time when it is difficult to feel anything other than pessimistic about the economy, it is most encouraging to know there are some among us who are prepared to lead in a forward direction with the development of concrete plans for our community to become a more economically viable place to live and thrive. Nancy Lee, Ken Hilton and Van Morrow are three candidates who possess these essential attributes.

Nancy Lee, candidate for town supervisor, has prior experience on the town board and planning board; Ken Hilton, candidate for town board, recently retired as superintendent of Sullivan West Central School District, has extensive administrative experience; and, Van Morrow, candidate for town Board, is a successful business owner, who understands that locally owned and operated businesses contribute to a vital economy. Together, Nancy, Ken and Van have the experience, credentials and commitment to lead us forward.
