I was pleased to see such a concise, well-organized column on PTSD by Dr. D. Lomax in the June 7 issue of The River Reporter. This letter is meant to provide some additional information on treatment for PTSD. We have treatment today that does not require a client to “re-experience the event from memory” in order to heal. There is a treatment, available since 1991, that has powerful empirical evidence for treatment of PTSD. The initial work and case studies were done by Dr. Francine Shapiro. In this treatment it is necessary to recall what you can about an incident but not necessarily re-experience it.
I urge anyone seeking treatment for PTSD to research EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing).
