A head start—but for what?
Several years ago, right around this time of year, someone wrote a letter to you about Delaware Valley’s (DV) football team getting an early start to the season. Whoever it was saw the team practicing on the DV grounds over the summer, as I did this week.
The questions raised then are the same ones that struck me: What about the kids taking SATs in six weeks—do they get a jump on the competition? How about those students who barely passed or were below average on the PSSAs —do they get extra time to work into shape?
One would think that a school district that sends only 5% of its grads to highly selective colleges would be paying attention to its academic mandate. But then, everyone at DV is doing fine for themselves. Forget the students. They come and go.
