I was down on Long Island for a memorial service for Jean Kerrigan’s sister (Marie Smith) and nephew (Jeff Smith). Jean’s nephew Jeff was in the military, and they presented the American flag to his son. I’d never seen it done this way before.

There is lots going on in our town: new homes are being built on the lake, and Matson’s Bar and Grill got a new outdoor deck. The Town of Cochecton clean-up days will be Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21, from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. If you have any questions call the town clerk at 845/932-8360, ext. 11.

I am writing my column on Saturday April 15, 20 years to the day after Tommy and I purchased our home in Cochecton Center. Time sure does fly; it seems like yesterday that we moved up from Bellerose, Queens. I was out and about today, and as I was driving through Lake Huntington I saw that Old Fire House Antiques was open.

I’m sorry to have to tell you we lost another Cochecton resident, Joe Meyer, on March 27. Joe was a resident of Cochecton, born and lived here all his life. In 1952, he married his wife, Maria Niessen. Joe had a brother Eugene who married Maria’s sister Mildred. Brothers married sisters.

Stella was one heck of a storm. I got over 30 inches of snow. I went out to shovel, and when I came back in, the lights went out. I decided to get under the covers and take a nap; when I woke up two hours later, I could not get out my front door. The snow was so high, I had to ram the door with my shoulder to get it open.

When I sit down to write my column, I always go to the week before to see what I wrote. So funny, last week I was shut in my house because we had a snowstorm, and today it is in the 60s and beautiful out. My windows are open. I just took down my Valentine’s Day decorations and put up decorations for St. Patrick’s Day.
