King of the Ice

KAUNEONGA LAKE, NY—Contest weigh-master Vinnie Locascio displays one of two pickerel that weighed in at more than three pounds each at Sunday’s annual King of the Ice fishing contest.

Contest registrar Charlie Greenhouse said 350 signed up for this year’s contest, an increase over last year’s turnout.

The Sullivan County Conservation Club sponsored contest, now in its 19th year, funds fish stocking programs in public lakes including White Lake and Swinging Bridge Reservoir.

Lawmakers seek ‘the fix’ for casino outcome

MONTICELLO, NY—New York State lawmakers, hampered by onerous negotiations with Native American tribes, introduced an alternate route last week to casino construction in the Catskills.

Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther (98th District, D) said the proposed amendment legislation is not new, however. It’s the original idea her predecessor, Jake Gunther, championed when he was elected in 1992, the assemblywoman said during an interview last Thursday.

Shelter neighbors demand response to animal cruelty

LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY—Evidence of animal cruelty at the Lazarian Animal Shelter on Pinewood Road drove residents to the Cochecton Town Board meeting last week to urge the supervisor and council members to prevent the town from gaining a reputation as “a sanctuary for animal abusers.”
