WILLIAM JAMES BELL

PAUPACK — William James Bell of Paupack, PA, a retired detective sergeant of the police department in Greeenburgh, NY and a 20-year area resident, died Wednesday, June 16, 1999, in Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, PA. He was 62.

Son of the late Watson and Kathryn Jewell Bell, he was born in Dobbs Ferry, NY. He was a member of the Episcopal Church; a member of the Dep. Constable Palmyra Twp. in Pike County and the National Rifle Association; was a volunteer at the Tafton Fire Company; a former member of the US Navy Reserves; and a former vice president of Pocono Security in Paupack.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Bell; four daughters, Kathleen Simpson of Chesapeake, VA, Roberta Lawlor, Charlene Skibber and Bilinda Reichman, all of Paupack; three brothers, Richard of Peekskill, NY, Watson "Bud" Bell, Jr. of Amelia Island, FL, and Peter of Stormville, NY; eight grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Robert.

Services took place at Teeters’ East Chapel in Hawley, PA. They were led by his brother, Watson Jr. Burial was held in Pine Grove Cemetery in Paupack.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Tafton Fire Company.

ELIZABETH JEAN BOSLER

MILFORD — Elizabeth Jean Bosler of Milford, PA, died Sunday, June 13, 1999, at home. She was 69.

Daughter of the late Victor and Grace Kemmiver LaBarr, she was born in Fairview, NJ. She was the widow of William Bosler and her first husband, Kenneth Lauer.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Milford, and the 18 Holer Golf League at Cliff Park Inn in Milford.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne Robert Lauer of Sparrowbush, NY and Vaughn Kenneth Lauer of Dover, DE; two sisters, Audrey Flemming of Missouri and Helen Scott of Vermont; a granddaughter, Melissa Lauer and three grandsons, Matthew, William and Michael Lauer.

DANIEL BOYLAN

HONESDALE — Daniel Boylan of Honesdale, PA, a local landscaper and night clerk at the Wayne Hotel in Honesdale, died Monday, June 14, 1999, at home. He was 52.

He was born in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

Graveside services were held at St. Mary Magdalen Cemetery in Honesdale.

FLORA CASSELL BUNTING

HONESDALE — Flora Cassell Bunting of Honesdale, PA, former operator with her husband of Bunting’s Market in Honesdale and a 90-year area resident, died Wednesday, June 16, 1999, at the Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale. She was 95.

Daughter of the late Fred and Louisa Miller Cassell, she was born March 23, 1904, in New York City. She was the widow of Kenneth Bunting.

She was valedictorian of Honesdale High School, class of 1921; was a former bookkeeper at Katz Underwear Factory, Birdsall Kenneth Woolen Mills and the Branley Sweater Factory. She was active in St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church as a Sunday School teacher and was a member of their Ladies Aid Auxiliary. She volunteered at the Honesdale Women’s Club and as the bookkeeper for the Hospital Auxiliary at The Other Shop.

Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Whaley of Lake View, NY and Janice Bertram of Honesdale; five grandchildren, John Bertram of Newark, OH, Seujan Bertram of Newark Valley, NY, Julie Bertram of Paupack, PA, Charles Whaley of New Bedford, MA and Todd Whaley of Boca Raton, FL; and a great-grandson, Charles David Bertram of Ohio.

Services were held at the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home in Honesdale. The Rev. John R. Warren officiated. Burial was at the Lutheran Cemetery in Honesdale.

HAZEL COOPER CARNELL

MONTICELLO — Hazel Cooper Carnell of Monticello, a homemaker and 11-year area resident, died Wednesday, June 16, 1999, in Community General Hospital in Harris. She was 79.

Daughter of the late James and Mary Hoffman Cooper, she was born November 3, 1919, in Middleville. She was the widow of Darven Carnell.

Survivors include three sons, Raymond and wife Mary of Charlotte, NC, James and wife Judith of Monticello and Robert of Wallkill; two brothers, James Cooper of North Babylon and Louis Cooper of Miami, FL; a step-brother, Jack Adams of Singer Island, FL; eight grandchildren, James, Mark, Jason, Robert, Amanda, Darlene, Heather and Amy; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, Penrose Cooper.

A Memorial Service of Celebration was held at the United Methodist Church of Monticello. Burial was private at the convenience of the family.

ROBERT CALIE, JR.

CALLICOON — Robert Calie, Jr. of Callicoon, employed as a construction laborer in Callicoon and a longtime Callicoon resident, died Thursday, June 10, 1999. He was 34.

Son of Glenda Conklin Calie of Newport Ritchie, FL and the late Robert Allen Calie Sr., he was born in Middletown.

Survivors include his mother; maternal grandmother, Jane Cole of Beach Lake, PA; four brothers, Brian and Jeffrey Conklin, both of Monticello, Eugene Calie of California and Andrew Calie of Middletown; three sisters, Laurie Conklin Edwards of Callicoon, Katherine Kraft of Narrowsburg, and Kellie Lewis of Honesdale, PA; eight nieces and nephews.

Services were held at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Callicoon. The Rev. Steve Knutsen officiated. Burial was in the Callicoon Cemetery.

ANTHONY CAVEZZA

HONESDALE — Anthony Cavezza of Honesdale, PA, a truck driver for 30 years and a six-year area resident, died Tuesday, June 8, 1999. He was 79.

Son of Anthony Sr. and the late Margaret Cavezza, he was born November 27, 1949, in Colonia, NJ.

Survivors include his wife, Elissa Nevins Cavezza, at home; his father, Anthony; seven daughters, Sabrina, Rebecca and Nicole, all of Honesdale, Lori Temple of Maplewood, NJ, Margaret of Colonia, NJ, and Anna of Linden, NJ; two sons, Anthony of Linden, NJ and Anthony of New Jersey; a sister, Nancy Hicks of Parsippany, NJ; a granddaughter, Melania of Linden, NJ; and a niece, Samantha of Parsippany, NJ.

A service was held earlier in the week in New Jersey.

ANNA SCOTT HARVEY

FORESTVILLE — Anna Scott Harvey of Forestville died in April, 1999, in Forestville. She was 80.

Daughter of the late Elizabeth and Tom Scott (a blacksmith in Cochecton for many years), she was born in September, 1918, in Cochecton.

She was a graduate of Narrowsburg High School.

Survivors include three sons, a daughter and grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a sister, Catherine.

PAULINE F. HEBERLING

HONESDALE — Pauline F. Heberling of Honesdale, PA, a retired seamstress at Katz Company and a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, June 17, 1999, at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. She was 70.

Daughter and last surviving member of the late Dorrance and Mildred Schuman Lester family, she was born in Pine Mill, ManchesterTownship, in Wayne County.

She was a member of the Teeple-Lester-Young Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post #765 in Equinunk, PA.

Survivors include her husband, Elmer B. Heberling; three daughters, Sandra Frederici of Nichols, NY, Deborah Katz and Dorothy Teeple, both of Honesdale; five grandchildren, Jeralyn, Berton and Fawn Miller, Alison Katz and Julie Nordenhold; and a great-granddaughter, Brittany Marie Hancock.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Vance and William Lester, and a sister, Roberta Teeple.

Services were held at the Hessling Funeral Home in Honesdale. Pastor Patricia Lee of the United Methodist Church of Sterling, PA, officiated. Burial was in the Union Cemetery in Equinunk.

EMILY GOETZ LINSHAW

MILFORD — Emily Goetz Linshaw of Milford, PA, a former Braille transcriber of novels, textbooks, poems and playing cards, died Monday, June 14, 1999. She was 97.

She was born in New York. She was the widow of Charles V. Linshaw.

She was active in volunteer work, serving as librarian of Rodelph Shalom.

Survivors include a son, Michael A. Linshaw, and seven grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Jack G. Linshaw.

ONDRA T. NICHOLS

HAWLEY — Ondra T. Nichols of Hawley Village Apartments in Hawley, PA, a former receptionist at the Cherry Ridge Dental Center and a 27-year area resident, died Thursday, June 3, 1999. She was 63.

Daughter of the late Charles and Kathryn Parliament Paulis, she was born January 7, 1936, in West Orange, NJ. She was the widow of Rex B. Nichols.

She was a charter member and helped co-found The New Covenant Fellowship Church of Hawley.

Survivors include a sister, Kathleen Brand of Hawley; sisters and brothers-in-law, Clara Bell and Walt Connis of Horseheads, NY, Mina and Albert DeRenzo of Elmira, NY, Sue and Skip Whittaker of Tafton, PA and Vincent Monteforte of Watchung, NJ; nieces, nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services were held at The New Covenant Fellowship Church. The Rev. Julie Shaffer officiated. Burial was at Forest Lake Cemetery in Elmira.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Missionary Department of The New Covenant Fellowship Church, the American Cancer Society, or Martha’s Garden at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale.

SARAH SASSO

HONESDALE — Sarah Sasso of Honesdale, PA, a retired seamstress, died Monday, June 14, 1999, at home. She was 74.

Daughter of the late Anthony and Antionette Santangello, she was born October 25, 1924, in Rosenhayn, NJ.

Survivors include her husband, Philip T. Sasso; two sons, Salvatore Carrubba of Los Angeles, CA and Thomas R. Sasso of Brooklyn, NY; two daughters, Dolores Ferrindino of New Jersey and Julianne Cafaro of Fords, NJ; two brothers, Anthony Santangello of New Port Richie, FL and Frank Santangello of Simi, CA; three sisters, Bessie Zergart of New Jersey, Josephine Santangello of Levittown, NY and Mary Ricci of Westbury, Long Island; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral mass was held at St. Bernard Roman Catholic Church in Levittown, NY. Burial was in the Pinelawn Cemetery in Farmingdale, NY.

BETTY CASE SERAFIN

GARFIELD, NJ — Betty Emma Case Serafin of Garfield, NJ, died Sunday, June 20, in New Jersey. She was 57.

Daughter of the late Leonard and Madeline Case, she was born in Newark, NJ.

Survivors include her husband, John Serafin; a daughter, Amy; three sons, Robert, Scott and Barry; two grandchildren, Darren and Caitlin; an uncle, Farrington Case of Welcome Lake, PA; two aunts, Alma Miller and Ruth Case, both of Welcome Lake.

Services were held at the Hessling Funeral Home on Main Street in Honesdale, PA. Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 24, at Indian Orchard Cemetery, Texas Twp. in Honesdale.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Garfield Ambulance Volunteer Corps in Garfield, NJ.

JAMES G. SIMCOX

MILFORD — James G. Simcox of Milford, PA, a salesman and eight-year area resident, died Friday, June 4, 1999, in Mercy Community Hospital in Port Jervis. He was 36.

Son of Russell and Pauline Cuccurullo Simcox, he was born March 29, 1963, in South Amboy, NJ.

He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Port Jervis. He served in the US Marine Corps.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Ann Stanis Simcox, at home; his parents of Sayreville, NJ; a son, James of South Amboy; a daughter, Jennifer of South Amboy; a brother, William of Manavillapan, NJ; three sisters, Kathleen of Bridgewater, NJ, Paula Giannace of Sayreville, NJ, and Diane of Old Bridge, NJ; nine grandchildren; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Services were held at the Assembly of God Church. The Rev. John Montague officiated. Burial was in Laurel Grove Cemetery in Port Jervis.

ROSEMARY A. SPALL

HAWLEY — Rosemary A. Spall of Hawley, PA, a former hairdresser and longtime area resident, died Saturday, June 19, 1999, at home. She was 90.

Daughter of the late Eugene A. Spall and Delia Gibbons Spall, she was born in Redlodge, MO.

She was a member of Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church in Hawley.

Survivors include a sister, Eugenia M. of Hawley; two brothers, William of Plymouth, MI and Leo of Hawley; three nephews, Gerald of Vineland, NJ, John F. of Hawley and J. Michael of Plymouth, MI.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at Queen of Peace Church in Hawley. The Rev. William B. Healey officiated. Burial was in Queen of Peace Cemetery in Hawley.

DENNIS F. TARNOWSKI

MILFORD — Dennis F. Tarnowski of Milford, PA, a retired drying machine operator for the Hercules Co. of Kenvil, NJ, died Friday, June 11, 1999, in Mercy Community Hospital in Port Jervis. He was 58.

Son of the late Stanley and Charlotte Dabrowski Tarnowski, he was born in Jersey City, NJ.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Rutledge Tarnowski; a son, Todd of Stanhope, NJ and two daughters, Debra of Byram, NJ and Wendy Bartsch of Vernon, NJ; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at the Stroyan Funeral Home in Milford. The Rev. Gerard Mullally officiated. Burial was held at the convenience of the family.
