Memorial Day observances

RIVER VALLEY -- Several Memorial Day observances have been scheduled for May 31.

In Sullivan County, observances will be held on May 31 at the Veterans Triangle on Route 42 in the Town of Forestburgh at 9:00 a.m., at the Lumberland Town Hall in Glen Spey at 10:00 a.m., at the Veterans Monument at the government center at 10:30 a.m. and at the Sullivan County Veteran's Cemetery on Infirmary Road in Liberty at 1:00 p.m.

The 115th annual Fremont Center Parade kicks off at 10:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. in the cemetery just above the Methodist Church..

In Pike County, the a Memorial Day Church Service will held at the 11:00 a.m. Mass at the Church of St. Patrick in Milford, followed by a 1:00 p.m. chicken barbecue at the Lackawaxen VFW on Route 590.

A Memorial Day, Monday parade is scheduled in Milford at 10:40 a.m. starting from the corner of 5th and Anne Sts., at Milford Park.

The Hawley Memorial Day Parade begins with a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. at Bingham Park on Route 6.

In Honesdale, the Memorial Day Parade begins at 10:00 a.m. at Triangle Park and proceeds down Main Street, up Church Street to Central Park where a memorial program will be held immediately after the parade.

The Tusten Settlement Association will hold a non-denominational Memorial Day Service on Sunday, May 30, at 2:00 p.m. at the Ten Mile River Baptist Church, Route 97, Narrowsburg.

Memorial Day racing starts earlier

MONTICELLO -- Monticello Raceway will have a special 1:00 p.m. post time on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31.

"We've always raced the Memorial Day Monday card at 1:00 p.m. and will continue with that tradition this year, too," noted track general manager Bill Sullivan.

The 1:00 p.m. post time on Monday is a change from the track's normal schedule, which usually has Monday post times at 3:30 p.m.

Besides the live harness action at Monticello Raceway on Memorial Day, fans can wager on the thoroughbred races from Belmont Park, Finger Lakes, Monmoth Park and Churchill Downs.
