This autumn meadowhawk dragonfly, recently featured in the 21 October issue of The River Reporter, was the largest and most prominent find of the day. About a dozen were spotted with a couple observed mating. This male is showing some wear, with his right rear leg missing and a tattered right rear wing.

November bug hunt

It’s the middle of November and there already have been several cold mornings where frost adorned pumpkins and windshields alike. The late-calling katydids have stopped calling; they have succumbed to the frost, their lifecycle complete. Most folks would not think of insects at the time the first snow usually arrives in the region. Some insects make their presence known, however, waiting for those warm fall days to make their appearance.

Ski Big Bear holds Ski Swap and Sale

LACKAWAXEN, PA—If your old skis, boots, etc. need to be replaced, plan on attending the annual Ski Swap. It provides an opportunity to sell your old equipment and replace it with something new or almost new. The sale will be located in the lower commons of Masthope Lodge.

It just keeps going and going...

HANKINS, NY—This 18-inch trout was caught and released by angler Debi Jondoh of New York City on November 12, at a spot just south of Hankins. According to fishing guide Tony Ritter of Narrowsburg, the waters were very cold—in the low 40s—making this an unusual catch for the season. At this time of year and with water temperatures this cold, walleye would have been a more typical catch.
