JOAN NORRELL BARAN

Joan Norrell Baran of Shohola, PA, formerly of Port Jervis, NY, passed away on Monday, October 25, 2010 at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis. She was 73.

She was born on July 13, 1937 in Port Jervis, the daughter of the late James E. “Alabam” Norrell and Marion Hart Norrell. Joan was a retired patient care technician at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie, NY and also worked at Bon Secours Community Hospital as a nurses aid.

A family statement reads, in part: “Mom was a master giver, protector, encourager and gatherer. She was truly authentic and taught us the value of relationships and reaching out to others. Humble and gentle, she always knew how blessed she was, and continually proclaimed her thanks to God for all she had. Wherever your paths may have crossed, you wouldn’t forget this little sparkplug. In the truest sense, our mother lived and loved to the fullest and with all of her heart.”

She is survived by her son, Jeffrey Masurack of Port Jervis; daughters Laura May and husband David of Shohola, Heidi Falkowski and husband Tom of Port Jervis, Diana Mann and husband Michael of Milford, PA; former husband Elmer G. Masurack, Jr.; sisters, Nancy DiSimone and husband Anthony of Wildwood Crest, NJ, Susan Betts and husband Gary of Canastota, NY and Patricia Norrell of Port Jervis; brothers James Norrell and wife Candace of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Michael Norrell and wife Vicky of Foley, AL and Joseph Norrell and wife Karen of Port Jervis; a brother-in-law; grandchildren Nicholas and wife Joann, Aaron, Karley, Lara, Stephanie, Serita and Alexandra; two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Joan is predeceased by her sister, Kathleen Norrell Buxton.

Memorial services were held Saturday, November 13 in the Milford United Methodist Church, Milford. Interment was private.

WILMA BONNELL

Wilma Bonnell, a lifetime Sullivan County resident, passed away on Friday, November 12, 2010, at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty, NY. She was 94.

Born on January 11, 1916 in Grahamsville, NY, she was the daughter of the late George and Minnie Countryman Asthalter.

Wilma was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church; the Foster Grandparents program at Liberty Elementary School; Golden Park Senior Citizens and RSVP Seniors of Sullivan County. She was retired from her position as a retail clerk at Sullivan’s Department Store in Liberty, NY.

Survivors include grandchildren Nina and Michael Verderber of Damascus, PA, Kippy and Jim Hemmer of Jeffersonville, NY, Andy and Eileen Brooks of Florida, Brian and Elia Brooks of California, Kelly and Chan Edwards of Youngsville, NY, Sean and Ellie Brooks of Monticello, NY and Ian Brooks of Jeffersonville; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She is predeceased by a son; a daughter; two brothers; a sister; and a grandchild.

Graveside funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 16 at Grahamsville Rural Cemetery with The Rev. John Thomason officiating.

ANDREW GOVAN DANTZLER

Andrew Govan Dantzler, USMC, passed away on October, 28, 2010, at his home in Union Dale, PA. He was 71.

Formerly of Huntington, NY, Govan volunteered with the Halsite Fire Department and served six years in the U.S. Marine Corps as a combat photographer. He studied underwater photography at the Florida Institute of Technology and worked as a motion picture and still photographer for Grumman Corporation’s Apollo lunar module project.

In 1974, Govan moved to Sullivan County, NY, teaching adult education at Sullivan County BOCES and conducting photography workshops at Sullivan County Community College. An active member of the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance and the Catskill Art Society, Govan freelanced as a photojournalist for The River Reporter. He served in Sullivan County’s Deputy Sheriff’s Department Highway Patrol and was elected Justice of the Peace for 12 years before retiring to Pennsylvania.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Elaine; daughters Nora Detweiler and Bridget McManus McCall; four grandchildren; siblings Salley Gibney, Patricia Calcagni, Andrea Adams, Bruce Dantzler and Denise Harwood; and numerous nieces and nephews.

GERALD A. DOETSCH

Gerald A. Doetsch of Callicoon, NY, a lifetime area resident, died Monday, November 8, 2010 in Callicoon. He was 81.

The son of the late Charles and Helen Dorrer Doetsch, he was born May 6, 1929 in Callicoon.

He was a member of Delaware Lodge 561 F&AM, H. Russell Kenyon Post 5808 Veteran of Foreign Wars, Lions Club, and the Howey’s Mens Club of Howey in the Hills, FL. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Sausmikat Doetsch at home; son Douglas and wife Susan; daughter Barbara Copus and husband Philip; grandchildren Reuben and Elijah Doetsch, Katelyn and Alyson Copus; brothers Warren Doetsch and wife Ruth, Eugene Doetsch and David Doetsch and wife Pat; sister Gloria Stevens; stepchildren,Patricia Ruckdeschel and husband Charles, Karen Hahn and husband Kurt, Gary Sausmikat and wife Renee; stepgrandchildren Katy Orr, Bryan and Alexis Hahn, Rita and Rebekah Sausmikat; and several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his first wife, Marjorie Hess Doetsch.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 13 at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home, Callicoon. Burial was in Callicoon Cemetery, Callicoon.

JOHN MACIEJEWSKI SR

John Maciejewski, Sr., of Damascus, PA died Thursday, November 10, 2010 in the Wayne Woodlands Manor, Waymart, PA. He was 95. He was preceded in death by his wife, Stasia Maciejewski in November 1968.

Born on September 16, 1915 in Forest City, PA, he was the son of the late Frank and Hedwig Smealkowski Maciejewski. He was 95.

He is survived by sons John Maciejewski and wife Anita of Damascus, Joseph Maciejewski and wife Sandra of Damascus and Kenneth Maciejewski and wife Marie of Clifford, PA; daughters Anastasia Pascoe and husband Clem of Archbald, PA and Cynthia Schaeffer and husband Robert of Beach Lake, PA; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by sisters Helen Polesnak, Celia Damasevitz, Mary Maciejewski, and Lottie Cella; and brothers Steve, Walter, Chester, and Frank Maciejewski.

Funeral services were held on Friday, November 12, 2010 at the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home, Honesdale, PA with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Carbondale, PA.

Interment followed in Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Township, PA.

JAMESON ROBERT MURPHY

Jameson Robert Murphy died unexpectedly at home on Wednesday November 10, 2010. He was four months old.

Born in Scranton, PA on July 11, 2010 he was the son of Johnryan Murphy and Kelly Marie (Laplace) Murphy.

He is also survived by paternal grandparents Richard Edward Starks, Sr. and Wendyann Murphy of Zephyrhills FL; maternal grandparents Robert Gerard Laplace and Jo Ann Laplace of Lackawaxen, PA; great-grandmother Margaret Laplace of Keyport NJ; sisters Skylar Marie Murphy, Delaney Nikole Murphy, Aliese Ann Murphy and Mikhayla Lynn Murphy; and brother Kamden Joseph Murphy.

A prayer service was held on Sunday, November 14 in the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home, Honesdale, PA.

Iona “Irene” Popielarz of Port Murray, NJ, formerly of Milanville, PA, passed away on Sunday, November 14, 2010 in Hackettstown, NJ.
