SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY—“The times they are a-changin’, sang Bob Dylan in his iconic ‘60s song that became an anthem for a generation of upheaval. Those were times of enormous social and political change to be sure, but changes in the landscape of all areas of human experience are an ongoing phenomenon. That maxim applies to high school sports as well.

For the first time since 2004, neither Sullivan West nor Eldred will be playing for a football sectional title. Both teams, which between them hold six Section 9 titles in a nine-year span, saw their hopes of even reaching this year’s playoffs sullied by defeats to division rivals on October 16. Under the new alignment/playoff criteria, only the top two teams in the Class C and Class D divisions, occupied by Sullivan West and Eldred respectively, can qualify. Both teams faced must-win scenarios and both fell short of the mark.
