This praying mantis, found on a pumpkin, is about to take flight. The praying mantis is not an agile flyer and does not capture prey in flight. It flies mainly for transport and to escape birds and other predators.

The perfect predator: praying mantis

During a coffee stop at the Windy Dog Deli in Shohola, PA this week, Deena, one of the owners, told me that there was a hitchhiker that had arrived along with some pumpkins they had just received. A look outside revealed a green praying mantis perched on one of the pumpkins. It wasn’t too long after I got the camera to capture this contrast of colors that the mantis took flight to a nearby patch of grass. No longer was the mantis conspicuous. It was close to being invisible, blending in perfectly with the green grass.
