Heavy woolly adelgid damage is evident in this hemlock at Walker Lake in Shohola, PA. Only the top of the tree appears intact.
Woolly adelgid
During a recent picnic held at Walker Lake in Shohola, PA this summer, I noticed something disturbing about the trees at the beach. The hemlock trees that shaded the beach had a lot of missing needles, and some smaller hemlocks were almost totally denuded. It didnt take too long to find a hemlock branch adorned with tiny white spots; these white spots resembled small cotton balls. This was the telltale sign of a woolly adelgid infestation.
Cliff Lake: how many times have I heard other fishers mention it in awe? Afterward always noting the difficulties in reaching that tranquil pond. Weeks ago, Dr. Oliver Herz phoned to ask me if I would like to fish Cliff Lake. I answered affirmatively, but being a cautious fellow, I asked Oliver just how he intended to get there. He explained that by the kindness of Mr. Gibson McKean it would be easy. Mr. McKean had the key to unlock the gate barring vehicle entry to the lake.
