Licensed wildlife rehabilitator Kathy Michell often works with the New York Department of Environmental Conservation. Using radio tracking devices, Michell monitors the activities of several timber rattlesnakes like the one depicted here. Look closely to see the snake’s transmitter at left.

Saving snakes

Until the moment she plucked the black rat snake—bare-handed—from its precarious position on Route 97 just outside of Narrowsburg, NY, the well-meaning folks gathered along the road probably didn’t believe the petite woman running toward them in a dress and heels, as she cried, “Hold on! I’m a snake expert!”

Moments later, wildlife rehabilitator Kathy Michell placed the snake safely away from the road. The timber rattlesnake crushed on Oak Street in Narrowsburg on July 12 wasn’t so lucky. Rattlesnakes are on the move right now as they complete long treks to forage for food such as rodents.
