Help sought for canine victims

HONESDALE, PA — Information and donations are being sought for two abandoned dogs that have come under the care of Dessin Animal Shelter recently. According to Dessin’s PA Humane Society Police Officer Marlene Metzger, “Sprinkles,” left, was struck by a car in Browndale over the Memorial Day weekend. She eluded capture for two days, until a trap was set and she was caught. “This sweet little dog seemed so relieved to have the help she so desperately needed,” said Metzger. “She licked my face when she was removed from the trap.” Her right eye and right hind leg were badly injured, requiring extensive surgery. The dog may have been abandoned by her owner, as she was not wearing a collar or tags. The other dog, “Star,” right, was brought to the shelter on June 2 by someone who said they saw the dog wandering between Hawley and Honesdale. She was emaciated, weighing only 15 pounds, roughly 50 percent of her ideal body weight. She was taken to a veterinarian and hospitalized for observation. Described as “sweet and kind,” the dog is currently being restored to health in a foster home. “This starvation did not happen overnight or even in a week or two,” said Metzger. “This dog appeared to have been living in a crate or cage for a long time. She was covered in feces and dried urine with sores on her body where the bony protrusions met the floor.” Anyone with any information about either dog is asked to call Metzger at 570/647-0239. Calls will be kept confidential. Those able to help with veterinary bills and other rehabilitation costs should call the shelter at 570/253-4037, visit www.dessinshelter.com or email dessin@ptd.net. Both dogs will eventually be available for adoption.
