Amos Pinchot and civil liberties at Grey Towers

MILFORD, PA — Amos Pinchot, considered by many to be one of the most radical and liberal thinkers of the Progressive era, will be the topic of discussion at a free lecture at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 8, at his family home, Grey Towers National Historic Site, 122 Old Owego Turnpike.

The program will draw some parallels to the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird,” which is the subject of the community-wide Big Read program. It will highlight some of Pinchot’s many contributions, including his role in the creation of the American Civil Liberties Union and his lifelong battle to protect civil liberties, also a core theme of “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

The program may be held outdoors. For more information call 570/296-9630.

Memories of Milford

MILFORD, PA — Milford resident Vicki Ciesielski, formerly Vicki Spotts of Hotel Fauchere fame, will be at the Pike County Historical Society’s Columns Museum on Saturday, May 8 to talk about her days spent at the Hotel Fauchere when her family owned and operated it. There will be a wine and cheese reception from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

The idea for the talk had its origins in a recent visit Ciesielski made to the museum, during which she reminisced about her life at the Hotel Fauchere with the museum director and volunteer staff. The historical society encouraged her to share her comments in a casual setting for interested parties. The talk dovetails with an exhibit recently installed at the Columns that features many old menus, wine lists and memorabilia surrounding the hotel.
