This beautiful bear passed through my yard last week, providing a thrilling wildlife “encounter” from the safety of my kitchen window.

It bears repeating

“Bears needn’t be feared, nor should they be dismissed as harmless. They simply need to be respected.” So notes the Pennsylvania Game Commission in their helpful and informative publication “Living with Pennsylvania Black Bears.”

A typical Ursus americanus weighs in at roughly 200 pounds, although 13 bears taken in Pennsylvania during the 2009 hunting season weighed 600 pounds or more. Males (boars) usually weigh more than females (sows). The 2009 harvest ranks second among Pennsylvania’s annual bear harvests, with 3,512 bears taken, including 117 in Pike County and 49 in Wayne County. The state’s largest numbers were reported in 2005, with 4,164 black bears harvested.
