Sullivan West 6, Eldred 0

ELDRED, NY—A quarter of the way into the season, teams that aspire to be serious contenders for post-season play must evince solid pitching, nearly flawless defense, heads-up base running and timely hitting. For visiting Class B Sullivan West and its Class D host Eldred, their non-league game on April 15 was an opportunity to sharpen those skills for the coming league battles that will determine their relative standings in OCIAA Divisions IV and VI respectively.

After losing to Honesdale in its opener, Sullivan West has now won five straight games, including this game’s 6-0 victory over Eldred and a subsequent 5-1 win over Deposit on April 17. The Eldred game featured a sterling matchup between Westie junior ace Ryan Alsdorf and Eldred senior first-time starter Billy McKerrell.

Green sweep

CALLICOON, NY—It may be early in the season, but Sullivan West’s boys golf team is already in hot pursuit of its seventh consecutive Division IV title, a quest that took a step forward with the team’s 249-301 win over Roscoe on April 13. With a large team in hand, coach Bob Fife was able to platoon a squad to take on Delhi at the same time to garner a non-league victory. Subsequent wins, including a 215-256 Division IV win over Fallsburg and a 230-236 non-league win over John S. Burke Catholic, had the Dawgs sailing along with a 5-1 (3-0 OCIAA) record as of April 19.
