MARGARET K. CAWLEY

Margaret Kehoe Cawley of Honesdale, PA, the retired owner of the Shannon Inn in New York City, died Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at the Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale. She was 91.

The daughter of William and Mary Morris Cleary, she was born August 6, 1918 in New York City.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, William and Molly Whalen of Kenoza Lake, NY; three grandchildren, Daniel Whalen and wife Stephanie of Alexandria, VA, Kristie Lanzoni and husband Chris of Delmar, NY and Alicia Lehmkuhl and husband David of Humble, TX; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two sisters.

A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date.

MARIE T. FELTER

Marie T. Felter of Sparrowbush, NY, passed away Saturday, March 20, 2010 at her home after a long courageous battle with cancer. She was 74.

She was born on December 25, 1935 in the Bronx, the daughter of the late Cornelius and Mary Harahan Sullivan.

Marie was a retired nurse’s aide for Doctor’s Sunnyside Hospital, Port Jervis, NY, and then retired from Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis, as computer registrar. She married Harrison “Harry” Felter, who survives at home. Marie was a communicant of St. Mary’s R.C. Church, Port Jervis, a member of the National Red Hat Assoc. and the National Cancer Support Group.

A family statement reads: “Marie loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and will be sadly missed by all. She always put others before herself and loved a good conversation with a ‘nice cup of tea.’”

In addition to her husband, Marie is survived by sons James Felter of Austin, TX, Kevin Felter and wife Diane of Riverview, FL and Brian Felter and wife Sandy of Sparrowbush; grandchildren Eileen, Steven, Dylan, Lauren, Kyle and Danielle; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Peter Sullivan.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 24 at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, Inc., Port Jervis.

Interment took place in Pine Hill Cemetery, Sparrowbush.

KENNETH H. GARN

Kenneth H. Garn, of Sarasota, FL died Wednesday, March 17, 2010. He was 89.

The son of the late Kenneth and Helen Garn, he was born April 7, 1920 in Mansfield, OH.

Ken enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941 and served three years during World War II as a combat engineer and participated in the invasions of North Africa, Italy, Sicily and Normandy. He wrote of his wartime experiences in two books, “Storming Ashore” and “The Secret D-Day.” Following the war, he worked as a locomotive fireman on the Pennsylvania Railroad in Altoona, PA and later as an insurance broker in Monticello, NY, where he raised his family and was active in many community organizations.

Ken is survived by his wife Jackie; daughter Lisa DeMaria and husband Stephen of New York City; and son K.C. Garn and wife Gloria of Lake Huntington, NY; grandsons Luke, Matthew, Christopher, and Andrew DeMaria and Kienan Garn.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by sister Miriam McKeown of Washington; and wife Marianne.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

BARBARA RUTH GOEBEL

Barbara Ruth Goebel of Jeffersonville, NY, a licensed practical nurse at Catskill Regional Medical Center, Harris, NY, died Saturday, March 13, 2010 at CRMC, Harris. She was 60.

The daughter of Ruth H. Seibert Allison and the late Francis Allison, she was born June 2, 1949 in Callicoon, NY. She was the wife of Herman E. Goebel.

Barbara was a member of the Jeffersonville Lutheran Church, and also worked for Wellness Home Care in Goshen, NY.

She is survived by her husband, Herman E. Goebel, at home; mother Ruth H. Allison of Jeffersonville; her three canine daughters, Molly, Maggie, and Emma; brother David Allison and wife Nancy of Walnut Creek, CA; sister Susan D’Amore and husband Paul of Newtonville, MA; one niece; and three nephews.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 17 at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home, Jeffersonville, with Pastor Kit Robison officiating.

Burial was in the Jeffersonville Lutheran Cemetery.

JOSEPH E. HARTMANN

Joseph E. Hartmann of Deerfield Beach, FL, formerly of Sparrowbush, NY, passed away Sunday March 13, 2010 at his home. He was 59.

He was born in Middletown, NY on June 27, 1950, the son of the late Francis Hartmann and Betty Heater Hartmann, who survives.

Joseph was a long time harness racing publicist and sports writer for the Times-Herald Record in Middletown, NY and the Tri-State Gazette in Port Jervis, NY. He was past president and chairman of the U.S. Harness Writers Association and past president of the American Harness Publicist’s Association. He was a member of St. Ambrose R.C. Church in Deerfield Beach.

He is survived by his mother of Sparrowbush, NY; daughter Jessica of Port Jervis; brother Paul Hartmann of Port Jervis; sister Laura Lincoln of Midlothian, VA; granddaughter Mackenzie; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Ambrose R.C. Church, in Deerfield Beach.


CECELIA IDA HULSE

Cecelia Ida Hulse of Long Eddy, NY, a retired rural mail carrier and a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, NY. She was 83.

The daughter of the late Peter and Edna Kneer Cram, she was born February 3, 1927 in Hancock, NY. She was the widow of Edward A. Hulse.

Mrs. Hulse was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Long Eddy, and Holy Cross Church in Callicoon, NY. She was a former member of the Long Eddy Hose Company Ladies Auxiliary, the Long Eddy Water District Board, the Town of Fremont Planning Board and Board of Elections.

She is survived by sons Edward Hulse of Port Jervis, NY, Jeffrey Hulse and wife Pamela of Sparrowbush, NY, Richard Hulse and wife Debra of Rome, NY, Gregory Hulse and wife GinaMarie of Wallkill, NY and Jon Hulse of Long Eddy; daughter Sandra McBride and husband Mark of Rock Tavern, NY; brother Herbert Cram; sister-in-law Zadie Capehart; 18 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Cheryl Karas; sister Anna Misner; and brother Elmer Adams.

A Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, March 20 at St. Patrick’s Church, Long Eddy, with Fr. Ignatius Smith, OFM, officiating. Burial was made in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Long Eddy.

DORIS ANN JONES

Doris Ann Jones of Kansas City, MO died at home on Wednesday, March 17, 2010 of cancer. She was 70.

Doris was born on February 24, 1940 in Bethel, NY. Her parents were Edwin F. Gettel and Anna A. Pless Gettel. She had one brother, Edwin F. Gettel Jr. of Narrowsburg, NY.

Doris is survived by daughters Sherry A. Jones-Ning of Kansas City North, MO, Gwen M. Jones-Starkey of Polo, MO and Stacey M. Jones of Gladstone, MO; grandchildren April Graves of Nashville, TN, Valerie Mills of Pleasant Valley, MO, Jonathon Stewart of San Diego, CA, Timothy Ning of Kansas City North and Donnie Niehouse of Gladstone, MO; two great-grandchildren; and two nephews.

KIM KELLY

Kim Kelly of Rock Hill, NY, a longtime area resident, passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at Westchester Medical Center. She was 48.

The daughter of James Espie and Sandra Gilloon, she was born on August 26, 1961 in Rochester, NY.

Kim was a kitchen supervisor at Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris, NY and a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Rock Hill.

Kim is survived by her mother, Sandra Tomer of Middletown, NY; her husband Carlton at home; sons Dylan, Travis and Justyn, all at home; daughter Sarah at home; brothers James Espie of Missouri and Daylan Espie and wife Katrina of Bethel, NY; and sister Lisa Lackey and husband Ray of Livingston Manor, NY.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 24 at the Church of the Nazarene, Rock Hill. Rev. Roy Shaffer officiated. Burial was in Fantinekill Cemetery, Ellenville, NY.


RUTH ANN LENIHAN

Ruth Ann “Jane” Lenihan of Forestdale, MA died Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Cape Cod Hospital from complications of lung cancer.

Born in Roscoe, NY, she was the daughter of the late Millard and Ethel (Smith) Bury. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Edward J. Lenihan.

Also surviving is a sister Susan (Santo) DiFazio of Holtsville, NY; two brothers, Donald Bury and wife Mary of Ellenville, NY and Thomas Bury and wife Donna of Jeffersonville, NY; and several nieces and nephews.

At Jane’s request, private family services were held.
