‘Black Narcissus’ at Sunday Night Cinema

HONESDALE, PA — The Wayne County Arts Alliance will present “Black Narcissus” at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 21 at the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, 32 Commercial Street.

“Black Narcissus” is a 1947 British film directed by the team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, known for visually luscious, offbeat films with an element of the supernatural (“The Red Shoes,” “Tales of Hoffman”). The film, which stars Deborah Kerr, concerns a group of nuns who travel to the Himalayas to do missionary work and instead are drawn in by the mystical spell of the location and its people. Film critic Leonard Maltin called the production “visually sumptuous, dramatically charged, and one of the most breathtaking color films ever made.” It won two Academy Awards, for best art direction and best cinematography.

“Black Narcissus” is the seventh of eight films in the Wayne County Arts Alliance’s winter film festival featuring classic movies by top directors from all over the world, and is shown by arrangement with the Motion Picture Licensing Corporation. A donation of $5 per person is suggested, to help support the activities of the Arts Alliance. The film will be preceded with a short introduction and followed by a discussion.
