The mayor’s gas drilling advice United we negotiate, divided we beg REGION—Calvin Tillman, the mayor of tiny DISH, TX, has the attention of the gas drilling industry. In advance of his visit to this region, an industry-funded group called Energy in Depth sent out an email to supporters attacking Tillman’s credibility and a report that his town commissioned regarding the air quality in DISH. The email said that the report had been “debunked” by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). The assertion was repeated in a question read at Tillman’s presentation to some 300 people at the Delaware Youth Center on February 20. | |||||

A partial jail solution? County officials consider a state facility FALLSBURG, NY—The state has about 200 empty prison beds in Fallsburg, and the county is looking for about 250 new prison beds, so maybe there’s a way for the county to pare down the cost of the proposed new county jail. |

More cuts next year? The state of the county is dark into the near future MONTICELLO, NY—“The light at the end of the tunnel has yet to emerge.” That’s how Jonathan Rouis, chairman of the Sullivan County Legislature, described the outlook for the local and national economy. While some economists are seeing the technical end of the recession, Rouis made clear in his State of the County address at the government center on February 17 that the economic outlook does not include a rosy scenario for the county’s fiscal condition this year. |
