Khan wins shot put at OCIAA Championships; legions of county kids place in massive meet

WEST POINT, NY — Placing in the top 10 in an event in the OCIAA League Championship meet is a major accomplishment. This is because the competition includes all schools large and small, including Class AA behemoths Warwick, Monroe-Woodbury and other powerhouses such as Class A Cornwall. Along with the county meet held a week ago and the sectionals slated for February 14, the meet is a showplace for indoor track talent.

Tri-Valley’s Tehnyat Kahn emerged as the league’s top shot putter with a heave of 35:05.50. She also took second in the weight throw (37-10) behind teammate Dominique Darby, who trumped all throwers with a mark of 46-05.50. Other top girl finishers included Sullivan West’s Rachel Deppa, who took second in the 1500 race walk (7:46.16) and set a new school record. Liberty’s Jessica Dunnigan took second in the 55 (7.56) and fifth in the long and triple jumps with marks of 15-04.50 and 34-04. Eldred’s Diana Schombs was fourth in the pole vault (9-0) and fifth in the high jump (4-10).

In the boys races, Monticello’s Shane Jackson took fourth in the 55 (6.83) and sixth in the 300 (37.41) and ran a leg in the Monties’ third-place finish in the 4x400 relay. Liberty’s Tim Burgio was third in the long jump (20-06.75) and fourth in the triple jump (41-02.75). Eldred’s distance duo of Hunter Proscia and Alex Campanella each garnered a seventh-place finish. Proscia ran 4:31.73 in the 1600, while Campanella turned in a 10:09.77 in the 3200. Tri-Valley’s Kyle Denman got fourth in the weight throw (41-00.50).
