THELMA JEAN ‘TOBY’ KNAPP BARTON

Thelma Jean “Toby” Knapp Barton of Cochecton, NY passed away at her home on Tuesday, January 5, 2010 after a long illness. She was 60.

The daughter of the late Ralph Knapp and Grace Hewlett Knapp Norwood, she was born on May 17, 1949 in Liberty, NY.

Thelma is survived by her children, Dale Knapp and companion Robin of Cochecton, James Knapp and wife Judy of Woodbourne, NY, Allen Barton of Guilford, CT and Jodie Murdock and her husband, Nelson of Shawnee, OK; sister Penny Heinle and husband Doug of Narrowsburg, NY; grandchildren Dale, Amanda, James, Brian, AJ, Alexandria, Annessia, Chelsea and Mercedes; one great-granddaughter; special brother-in-law Thomas Norwood of Cochecton; best friend Melanie Ferber; her family of Callicoon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Fred Barton; stepfather James Norwood; and sister Catherine Norwood and Patty L. McAbier.

Services will be private and cremation will take place at Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope, NY.

BARBARA ANN KLIMCHOK CARLEW

Barbara Ann Klimchok Carlew of Narrowsburg, NY, a bookkeeper for many years, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 7, 2010 at ORMC, Arden Hill Campus in Goshen, NY. She was 56.

The daughter of the late Joseph Klimchok and Dorothy Hadden DuBois, she was born May 7, 1953 in Passaic, NJ.

A family statement reads: “Barbara Klimchok Carlew: A heart of gold—a unique and special woman. No matter who she met through her life, she left a glow in theirs. Barbara was loving, caring, warm, giving, loyal and respected. She will be deeply missed.

Survivors include her daughter, Jennifer Dailey and husband Steven of Narrowsburg; grandsons John and Brandon Dailey; stepfather Brian DuBois and Marty Bogdanowitz of Cochecton, NY; adopted son and special friend, Sonny Patel of Forestburg, NY; sisters Linda Schaefer of Lake Huntington, NY; Donna DuBois and husband Gregory of Cochecton, Sandra Dawb and husband Jeffrey of Narrowsburg, Brenda Manzi and husband Jeffrey of Cochecton; brothers Brian DuBois and wife Chris of Youngsville, NY, Bradley DuBois and his wife Chris of Cochecton, Bruce DuBois and wife Christine of Bethel, NY; special aunt Merle Baugher; and nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her son, Jared David Carlew; and step mother Lillian Bernitt Klimchok.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday, January 14 at Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home, Jeffersonville, NY.

A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of the Lake Church on Friday, January 15, at 11:00 a.m., with Fr. William Scully officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Monticello, NY.

KATHERINE CHRISTON

Katherine Christon passed away peacefully at the Wayne-Woodlands Manor, Waymart, PA on January 6, 2010. She was 95.

She lived at Wayne-Delaware Manor for the last six years and was a resident of East Elmhurst, NY for 60 years.

She was born in New York City, daughter of the late Emma and Martin Diercksen.

She is survived by her sons Peter and wife Becky Christon of Hammonton, NJ and Martin and wife Dorothy Christon of Crofton, MD; four grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her husband Christ; and five brothers.

Funeral services were held at Conway Funeral Home, Jackson Heights, NY, on Monday, January 11 and interment followed in All Faiths Cemetery, Queens, NY.

JAMES EDWIN FEATHERMAN

James Edwin Featherman of Milford, PA, died Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis, NY. He was 67.

He worked for C & D Battery Technology.

The son of George and Dora (Little) Featherman, Jr., he was born on June 11, 1942, in Wantage Twp., NJ. He was married to Maryann (Fletcher) Featherman.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons George Featherman of Matamoras, PA, Charles Featherman of Shohola, PA and James Featherman Jr. of Florida; daughter Billy Jo Crawn of Greeley, PA; sisters Betty Scott of Hamburg, NJ and Shirley Breckridge of North Carolina; brother Richard Featherman of New York; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Joe Little; and sister Luella Hamilton.

Funeral services were held at the Stroyan Funeral Home, Milford, PA on Saturday, January 9. The Rev. David Repenning officiated.

ROBERT S. GRANT

Mr. Robert S. Grant of Cuddebackville, NY and a lifetime resident of the area, died Sunday, January 10, 2010 at Westchester Medical Center. He was 65.

He was born March 26, 1944 in Port Jervis, NY, the son of the late Robert Shannon and Freida Eleanor Horton Grant.

Robert married Betty Jean Conklin on November 21, 1963 in Port Jervis, and he worked as an electrical and chemical engineer for C&D Battery in Huguenot, NY.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Jean Grant, at home; mother Freida French of Port Jervis; sons Robert L. Grant and wife Michelle of Huntsville, AL and Brian A. Grant of Barryville, NY; brothers and sisters James Grant, Butch, Jack, Gary, Wanda and Sue Curry, Harold, Alice, Denise and Richard French; grandchildren Brandon, Cody, Hunter and Sabina Grant; and several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by a brother, Keith Curry.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 14, at 10:00 a.m., at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home, 100 E. Main Street, Port Jervis, with the Rev. Peter Tran Van Phat officiating. Burial will be at Rural Valley Cemetery, Cuddebackville, NY.

HINRICH LUETJE

Hinrich Luetje of Yulan, NY, a longtime resident of the area, died Friday, January 8, 2010 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale, PA. He was 88.

The son of the late Johan and Sophie Luetje, he was born August 20, 1921 in Middeldor, Germany. He was married to Traute Hansen Luetje for 59 years, who survives.

Hinrich was a retired master auto mechanic. He and his wife had owned Lakeview Farm Resort in Yulan. Hinrich was a member of the Lake Wallenpaupack German American Club.

A family statement reads: “Hinrich was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a person that always thought about others before himself. He will dearly be missed by all, but especially his family.”

Survivors include his wife; daughters Gudrun Roeder and husband Charles of Yulan and Sonja Guzzardo and husband Stephen of Middletown; son Christian Luetje of Waiting River, Long Island; grandchildren Christina Cook, Trudy Roeder, Stephanie Roeder and Marissa Guzzardo; and brother Hans Luetje of Germany.

He is predeceased by a brother, Theodore Luetje.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 13 at the Harrison-Rasmussen Funeral Home, Barryville, NY. Burial will take place in Montoza Cemetery, Barryville, NY.

BARBARA E. NORAN

Barbara E. Noran of Smallwood, NY, a homemaker, passed away on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris, NY. She was 83.

The daughter of the late William T. Gardiner and Harriet Pampling Gardiner, she was born June 2, 1926 in Brooklyn.

Barbara and her late husband, Charles A. Noran Sr. moved to the Catskills from Brooklyn after their retirement in 1980. Barbara was a member of the Bethel Senior Citizens and the Republican Club of Bethel.

She is survived by her son Charles A. Noran Jr. and wife Anne of Howard Beach, NY.

Funeral services and burial will be private. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Bethel,NY.


MILDRED C. RYDER

Mildred C. Ryder, of Sparrowbush, NY, formerly of Dingmans Ferry, PA, passed away Friday, January 8, 2010 at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis, NY. She was 86.

The daughter of the late Edward and Mildred (Jennigan) Gross, she was born August 2, 1923 in Croyden, PA. She was married to the late Ollie “Bud” Ryder, who passed December 7, 1999.

Survivors include her son, Raymond Ryder of Dingmans Ferry; daughters Dolores Schaumburg of Goshen, NY, Peggy Myers of Port Jervis, NY and Jane Davies of Sparrowbush; sisters Elizabeth O’Brien of Tampa, FL and Carolyn Muellen of Ormond Beach, FL; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at Stroyan Funeral Home, Milford, PA on Tuesday, January 12 with Rev. Niels Nielsen officiating. Interment will take place in Delaware Cemetery, Dingmans Ferry, PA at the convenience of the family.

BETTY LOUISE (LYON) SCULLY

Betty Louise (Lyon) Scully passed into eternal rest on January 7, 2010 in Orange City, FL. She was 85.

She was born on January 17, 1924 in Matamoras, PA to Harold Raymond Lyon and Ethel Belcher Lyon.

Betty was a 1945 graduate of Binghamton General Hospital School of Nursing. She and her husband were proprietors of Scully’s Motel and Restaurant from 1950 to1980. Upon retirement they relocated to Lake Helen, FL. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Christ in Lake Helen and a resident of the Lake Helen Villa. Betty touched the lives of many people. She was a devoted spouse, wonderful mother and grandmother and loyal friend to many.

She is survived by four children, Christopher J. “Jack” Scully Jr. and wife Susan of Eldred, NY, James Edward Scully and wife Cynthia of Bakersfield, CA, Dr. Janis M. Scully and husband Bart of Fayetteville, NY and Barbara Rog and husband Bill of Burbank, CA; brother Raymond Lyon and wife Carol of Matamoras; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Christopher John “Jack” Scully Sr.; a sister, Grace Hoff, formerly of Lake Helen, FL; and a son, Michael Joseph Scully, formerly of Sparrowbush.

Memorial services were held at the convenience of the family.

MARY G. WHEELER

Mary G. Wheeler of White Lake, NY, a longtime area resident of the area, passed away on Sunday, January 10, 2010 at the Montgomery Nursing Home in Montgomery, NY. She was 89.

The daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Cushing O’Neill, she was born on August 2, 1920 in Brooklyn, NY.

She moved from Brooklyn to White Lake in 1975 after her retirement. She worked for the Monticello School District as a bus aide for handicapped children and later as a “Grandma.”

Mary is survived by her son, John (Jack) Joseph Wheeler and wife Rita of Rotonda West, FL; grandsons Michael Wheeler, Daniel Wheeler and Brian Wheeler of New York City, Chris Wheeler and Matthew Wheeler of Stockton, CA; six great-grandchildren; and many special friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Wheeler and her son, Patrick Frances Wheeler.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. at Ramsay’s Funeral Home, 3534 State Route 55, Kauneonga Lake, NY on Thursday, January 14, followed by burial at Evergreen Cemetery in Bethel, NY.
