Some of this weeks newsmakers in Sullivan County sports

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY Everywhere you looked this week, athletes, teams and coaches were achieving prominence in the helter-skelter resurgent action following the holiday break. Eldred coach Frank Kean garnered another honor as the Section Nine Coaches Association selected him as Coach of the Year for 2009. Kean had already been chosen as the New York Jets Coach of the Week for the Tri-State Region and had won the Times Herald-Record Coach of the Year. Kean was presented with a plaque from Marlboro coach Bob Koonze, the president of the Section Nine Coaches Association at this years Section Nine football All-Stars dinner held at the Hudson Valley Resort in Kerhonksen on January 10.
Liberty hosted its First Annual New Years Basketball Tournament on January 8 and 9 and finished as runner up to S.S. Seward in a riveting game won by the Spartans 50-45. Monticello defeated Livingston Manor in the consolation game by the score of 66-54. Manors Troy Correa, Monticellos Jesse Kapito and Libertys Herman Drayton were named to the All-Tournament team. Tri-Valleys girls basketball team picked up two vital league wins by defeating S.S. Seward 38-28 on January 6 and Chester 59-23 on January 8. The Lady Bears are on top of Division V at 6-3 (3-0 OCIAA). Eldreds girls defeated Roscoe 41-38 on January 8 and currently sit at 6-1 (3-0 OCIAA).
Monticello coach Chris Russo and Washingtonville coach Todd Rose coached barefoot in their teams boys basketball non-league game on January 13 in the Samitans Go Barefoot for Bare Feet fundraiser. Currently, there are approximately 300 million children around the world who dont have a single pair of shoes.
People can text 89544 and $5, which will be used to buy a pair of shoes for a child who has none, and will be charged to their cell phone bill.
