Red tails: hawks and squirrels

The area of Narrowsburg, NY known as the Flats has an unusual abundance of black squirrels. Black squirrels are a melanistic color phase of the common Eastern gray squirrel, also found in high numbers there.

Squirrels provide sustenance to predators such as the red-tailed hawk.

Horticultural scholarships available

PENNSYLVANIA—The Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania will offer 10 scholarships to students who plan to further their education in horticulture, floriculture, landscape architecture, conservation, forestry, botany, biology, agronomy, plant pathology, environmental control, city planning, land management and/or allied subjects. Each scholarship award is a minimum of $1,000.

Guided eagle excursion

LACKAWAXEN, PA—Join the Northeast PA Audubon Society on a 20-person tour on Saturday, January 23, with a snow date of Sunday, January 24. Meet at 10:00 a.m. at the Eagle Institute’s winter office in Lackawaxen, and dress warmly in layers, wear waterproof boots and bring a bag lunch. A fee of $10 per person covers the heated bus trip to and from viewing locations.
