This is a spotted knapweed flowerhead as seen on November 6 at the summit of Sunrise Mountain in New Jersey. A flowerhead can contain from 25-40 individual flowers. About 18 white anthers, or pollen holders are visible.

A real late bloomer

On a recent early November trip to Sunrise Mountain in Stokes State Forest in New Jersey, I checked the weather on the summit. It was a partly cloudy morning with a ten to 20 mph northwest wind and cold, about 26 degrees—just about right for migrating hawks, falcons and eagles I hoped to see that morning.

PEEC hosts retreat for military families

DINGMANS FERRY, PA—At the end of October, the Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC), in partnership with the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, hosted more than 70 military kids and their families during an Operation Purple® Family Retreat.

Happy birthday, Smokey

SHOHOLA, PA—Kindergarteners at Shohola Elementary School had a special guest come to their school recently: Smokey Bear, who visited along with some local forest rangers. The students learned about the dangers of forest fires and how important it is to be careful in the forest.
