The legal battling regarding this shul and community center on Shultz Road in Bethel, NY has been nearly resolved with the United Talmudic Academy reportedly agreeing to pay the town $20,000 for road improvements. The group also has agreed to submit new plans and to allow future inspections. In return, the town will grant the group a six-month certificate of occupancy.

Lawyer objects to challenged voter questionnaire

MONTICELLO, NY—In a court session on November 17, Judge Frank LaBuda postponed a decision on whether to dismiss challenges to more that 90 Hasidic voters who have recorded their local addresses as being in bungalow colonies.

According to court documents, a lawyer for the voters asked that the challenges be dismissed because the voters were not notified within five days of the challenge, which is required by statute but, instead, were notified by the Sullivan County Board of Elections on the sixth day after the challenge.

Solid waste fees approved

Fee structures yet to be set

MONTICELLO, NY—There was more than a bit of discontent about the prospect of the county imposing a fee on every building for the purpose of paying for the solid waste system. The towns of Highland and Tusten passed resolutions opposing the fees and of the dozen or so residents who turned out at a meeting on November 12 to comment, all but one were opposed.

Brian Smith: A lone voice for dairy farmers?

HONESDALE, PA—Brian Smith is a brave man.

He is running for a vacant position on the board of the giant coop Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) that has come under heavy criticism from both dairy farmers and President Obama’s Department of Justice Antitrust Unit (DOJ). The DOJ brought an antitrust lawsuit against DFA on October 8.

If elected, Smith may be alone on the board in his efforts in criticizing some of the decisions of DFA—a voice crying in the wilderness.
