MARIE J. BENNEDUM

Marie J. Bennedum, a homemaker of Fosterdale, NY, died October 18, 2009 at Achieve Rehab and Nursing Facility in Liberty, NY. She was 74.

The daughter of Henry and Helen Lieb Jobmann, she was born July 29, 1935 in Brooklyn, NY. She was married to the late Robert A. Bennedum who passed away on October 7, 2009.

She is survived by two daughters, Deborah Burke and husband John of Liberty and Cindy Kashan and husband Eric of Monticello, NY; brothers, Oscar Jobmann of Mt. Pocono, PA and Ronald Jobmann of Baltimore, MD; one niece and several nephews.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 21 at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville,NY.

Burial was in Fosterdale Cemetery in Fosterdale, NY.

LARRY JAMES COLLINS

Larry James Collins of Beach Lake PA, died Tuesday, October 20, 2009 in the Golden Living Center Scranton, PA after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 45.

Larry was born in Honesdale, PA, the son of the late Grant and Dolores Diehl Collins. He graduated from Honesdale High School Class of 1983, where he was a member of the football and wrestling teams. Larry went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps.

He is survived by sisters Janet and husband Russell Curtis, Waymart, PA, Laura and husband Allen Kemmis of Kansas and Debbie and husband Joseph Gavitt, Boyds Mills, PA; brothers Gary and wife Barbara Collins and Grant and wife Judy Collins, all of Honesdale; step-son Eric Lassley, Honesdale; step-daughter Briann Lassley, Philadelphia; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, October 24, 2009 in the Honesdale Gospel Tabernacle, Honesdale, with Rev. Lane Jones officiating.

Cremation was at the Maple Hill at Salem Crematory, Archbald. Interment will be in the Indian Orchard Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, 2009.

MARTHA M. MONINGTON DAVIS

Martha M. Monington Davis of Tyler Hill, PA and a lifelong resident of the area, passed away quietly on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009. She was 90.

The daughter of the late James Ralph and Hattie Geneva Tyler Monington, she was born in Tyler Hill on January 23, 1919. She was the widow of Vernon Davis who had passed away in 1995.

Martha was the retired owner of Davis Home for the Aging in Tyler Hill. A family statement reads: “Martha was a good mom, grandma and great grandmother; she took care of everyone. She will greatly be missed. She was an avid quilter and loved to crochet.”

She is survived by her son, James V. Davis of Tyler Hill; daughter Marlene Virbitsky and husband Anthony of Tyler Hill; grandchildren Tim Cawley, Marlene Johanas, Kelly Davis, Hattie Robinson, Anthony Virbitsky, Martha Virbitsky and Julie Warfield; 15 great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by sisters Mary Kinsman and Wana Cole; and brother Paul Monington.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday. October, 28, 2009 at Calkins Union Cemetery, Calkins, PA.

ERIC DOUGLASS DODGE

Eric Douglass Dodge died on October 24, 2009 after a short stay in hospice care. He was 90.

Mr. Dodge was born in Suffern, NY and maintained a residence there until his retirement. He graduated with a degree in mathematics from Williams College in 1941, and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. His profession as a developmental economist took him to many parts of the world. He and his wife retired to Hilton Head Island in 1978.

He was an avid sailor, plying the waters from Maine to Granada , a tennis player until the age of 84, and an aficionado of music, especially classical jazz.

Father of Katharine Dodge of Lake Ariel, PA and Eric T. Dodge of Onancock, VA, he is also survived by four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Suzanne Chapman.

There will be a private family memorial at a later date.

Donations may be made to organizations dealing with family planning and population issues, the Rocky Mountain Institute, or the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.


REENE FELLER

Reene Feller, a resident of Bethel, NY and formerly of the Bronx, died peacefully in Northern Manor Multi Care Center in Nanuet, NY. She was 92.

Reene was born in New York City on June 6, 1917, the daughter of Charles and Anna Kleinberg. She was the widow of Frank Feller who died in 2001.

Reene is survived by her daughter, Alice Sionsky and husband Howard; son Howard Feller and wife Anna; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by four sisters.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 27 in the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, Inc., Monticello, NY. Burial was in Temple Beth-El Cemetery, Bethel, NY.


RUTH E. GEROW

Ruth E. Gerow of White Lake, NY passed away at Orange County Regional Medical Center in Middletown, NY on Wednesday October 21, 2009. She was 69.

Ruth was the daughter of the late John and Mary Strain Wolcott and was born on January 9, 1940 in Margaretsville, NY.

Ruth was a bus driver for Gershowitz Transportation in Liberty, NY and a member of Grace Church in Callicoon, NY.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Frank L. Gerow, at home; sons Kip Gerow and wife Joanne of Swan Lake, NY, Frank L. Gerow Jr. and Corey Gerow, both of White Lake; daughters Gail M. Denman of Liberty and Cindy Utter and husband Larry of Johnson, NY; brother Jack Wolcott and wife Ruth of Margaretsville, NY; sisters Marion Deed of Grand Gorge, NY, Edna Bivins and husband Douglas of Montgomery, NY and Virginia Neff and husband Bruce of Harford, NY; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was predeceased by her brother, Millard Wolcott.

A memorial service will take place on Sunday, November 1, at 2:00 p.m. at the Grace Church, Route 97, Callicoon, NY. Rev. Douglas Lee will officiate.


CYRIL ‘CY’ PLOTKIN

Cyril “Cy” Plotkin, a longtime resident of Sullivan County, passed peacefully at his home on October 18, 2009. He was 98 years old.

Born in Brooklyn on February 25, 1911, Cy and his family moved to Kauneonga Lake, NY where his parents opened the Woodlawn Hotel when he was 10. Cy attended Northeastern University and majored in engineering. Upon returning to Sullivan County, Cy worked at the family hotel. He was a music lover and played piano professionally in hotels around the county. He married Annie Siegel in 1932 and was married for 72 years. Cy ran the Landfield Avenue Garage, was an avid photographer, traveled extensively throughout the world, helped charter the Sullivan County Photography Club, played and listened to music and enjoyed his family.

He is survived by brother-in-law Leon Siegel of Livingston Manor, NY; sister-in-law Cecille Plotkin of Monticello, NY; nephews Gary Siegel, Jerry Plotkin, Steve Plotkin, Joe Watson, Raymond Patruski; nieces Teri Banerjee, Shelley Watson, Judy Siegel, Joann Plotkin, Barbara Plotkin and Carol Petruski; many great-nieces and nephews; great-great-nieces and nephews; and his devoted caregiver, Nicole Kuval.

Cy is predeceased by his wife; brothers Norman, Jack and Allen; and nephew Mark.

There will be no visitation.

EVELYN F. THOMPSON

Evelyn F. Thompson, a lifelong resident of Greeley, PA, died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center, Honesdale. She was 87.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alexander Neil Thompson, in 1989.

Born March 23, 1922 in Shohola, PA, she was the daughter of the late John J. and Catherin (Fickussen) Hess.

Prior to her retirement, she worked as an assembler for Spark-o-Matic in Milford, PA. Mrs. Thompson was a Charter Member of VFW Ecker-Haupt Post 5635, Lackawaxen, PA, and a member of Greeley Fire Co. and St Luke’s Lutheran Church, Greeley.

She is survived by two daughters, Julie Tussel and Millie Jensen, both of Greeley; two sons, Billy Thompson of Yulan, NY, and John Thompson of Greeley; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Neil.

A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced, followed by urn placement in McKean Valley Cemetery. Cremation will be in Lake Region Crematory, Lake Ariel.


EDWARD YOBUCK

Edward YoBuck of, Hawley, PA died Monday, Oct. 19, 2009 at VNA Hospice at CMC in Scranton, PA. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Helen Kenosky YoBuck.

Mr. YoBuck was born January 15, 1923 in Monessen, PA and was the son of the late John and Frances YoBuck.

He retired from the U.S. Navy after serving for 28 years including World War II and Korean conflict. He also retired as a bank assistant.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a stepdaughter, Susan and husband Frank Grassi of Shohola, PA; sister Anna Mercurio of Hicksville, NY; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Charles.

Calling hours will be Thursday, October 22, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Teeters’ East Chapel, 505 Church St, Hawley, PA. A funeral mass was held Friday, October 23 at BVM Queen Of Peace Roman Catholic Church, Hawley, with the Rev. Richard W. Beck officiating.

Burial was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla, NY.
