Art and life of Brownscombe provides ‘Food for Thought’

HONESDALE, PA — Sally Talaga, Executive Director of the Wayne County Historical Society, will be the featured speaker in the last “Food for Thought” talk of 2009 on Saturday, October 31 at 4:30 p.m., at the society’s museum at 810 Main Street. The presentation is titled “WCHS’s Works of Art by Jennie Brownscombe.” The historical society owns a large collection of Brownscombe’s works.

Born on Cliff Street in 1850, Jennie became a leading artist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, one of the very few women artists to make a living in her day. She often returned to Honesdale to visit her mother and friends over the years and is buried in Glen Dyberry Cemetery. Talaga has recently been busy researching Brownscombe’s life and art, making trips to Palenville, NY, where she had a studio, and Washington, DC.
