LORRAINE MANOUSE SMITH CIARELLI

Lorraine Manouse Smith Ciarelli entered the kingdom of heaven on October 12, 2009 in Lackawaxen, PA after a battle with cancer. She was 79.

Lorraine was born on March 4, 1930 in Callicoon, NY to the late Helen and Thomas Manouse.

She attended the Delaware Valley School in Callicoon. She lived most of her years in Adams Center, NY where she did the Lord’s work by becoming a Eucharistic minister for St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church and was at times choir director. Lorraine was a professional singer and entertained many, including many shows for service men at Fort Drum, NY. She was a member of the Adams Center Ambulance Corps and fire department auxiliary. Lorraine drove school bus for 24 years.

A family statement reads: “Lorraine will be sorely missed by her family and friends, but especially she will be truly missed by her husband Lawrence Ciarelli Sr., to whom she was married for 11 years.”

In addition to her husband, she is survived by children Diane Miller and companion Martin of Santa Barbara, CA, Donna Smith of Ogdensburg, NY, Marie Harnass and husband Vincent of Adams, Ted Manouse and wife Ruth of Winter Haven, FL, Jeanne Manouse Grau and husband Jack of Winter Haven, FL and Walker Valley, NY and Tina Holbert and husband Wayne of Lackawaxen, PA; godchild Abigail Eisenbach Barnes of Lackawaxen; the Ciarelli family; six grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Lorraine is predeceased by her first husband Donald Smith, to whom she was married for 46 years; her brother Jack Manouse; and one niece, all of Callicoon, NY.

A memorial service will be celebrated at St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church in Adams on October 24 at 1:00 p.m.

BORGHILD PEDERSEN

Borghild Pedersen of Port Jervis, NY, formerly of Shohola, PA, died Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at St. Joseph’s Place, Port Jervis. She was 94.

Born October 27, 1914 in Norway, she was the daughter of Nikolai and Marie (Knutsen) Nilsen. She was married to the late Olaf Pedersen, who predeceased her on October 12, 2004.

She was a secretary at the New American Library in Bergenfield, NJ.

She is survived by her daughter, Marie Kristiansen and husband, Olaf of Shohola, PA; son Norman Pedersen and wife Maureen of Middletown; grandchildren Matthew, Michelle, Kimberly, Karen, David, and Julie; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held on Sunday, October 18 at the Milford Bible Church, Milford, PA with the Rev. Robert Elliot officiating.

Final interment will be at the George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus, NJ at the convenience of the family.

HAROLD V. SEARS

Harold V. Sears of Honesdale, PA died Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at the Dunmore Nursing Home after an illness. He was 85.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Elizabeth Lambe.

Born in Manhattan, NYC, he was the son of the late Harold E. and Mary McAleer Sears.

He worked for the F & M Schaefer Brewing Company as a branch sales manager for 28 years. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during WW II.

He volunteered as train conductor and narrator on the Stourbridge Line train in Honesdale. He was also a member of the American Legion, Honesdale Post and a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish, Honesdale.

He is survived by a daughter, Mary M. Psarudakis and husband Emanuel of Cochecton, NY; a son, William A. Sears of Kingston, NY; two grandchildren, Denise and Bob; and two great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, October 16, 2009 in St. Mary Magdalene Church, Honesdale. Interment was in National Cemetery at Fort Indiantown Gap, Annville, PA.

ARTIE E. ‘TUGBOAT’ SCHUM

Arthur E. Schum, also known as “Tugboat,” a longtime resident of Hankins, NY and a retired New York City tugboat captain, died Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, PA. He was 81.

The son of the late Arthur and Marion Pope Schum, he was born July 10, 1928 in Brooklyn. He was married to Bonnie Butler Schum.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served in World War II.

He is survived by his wife Bonnie at home; his children, Tara Haberli, Regina Coulter and husband Eric, Raymond Schum, Nancy Lekanides, Michael Schum and Patrick Schum.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Christine Schum.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

JENNIE K. TARASCHUK

Jennie K. Taraschuk of Honesdale, PA died October 8, 2009 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law. She was 92.

She was the wife of the late Ambrose Taraschuk, who passed away December 12, 2002.

Born in Philadelphia on December 31, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Steven and Mary Ponchko Krogler.

Jennie was a housewife and accomplished seamstress who always had a great love and admiration for her family.

She is survived by her son, Patrick Taraschuk and wife Betty of Galilee, PA; her daughter, Nancy Garing and husband Walter J. of Honesdale; grandchildren Jordan N. Taraschuk of Dornsife, PA, Justin W. Taraschuk and wife Lorissa of Honesdale, Jamilyn M. Taraschuk of Galilee and Shawn P. Garing and fiancé Rebecca Dillon of Honesdale; two great grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law Stephen and Dorothy Krogler of Warren, PA; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; and her loving and constant companion, her cat Sachee.

She was preceded in death by her brother Joe, and her sisters Anna and Mildred.

As per her wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service.

JEFFREY DOUGLAS TODD

Jeffrey Douglas Todd of Matamoras, PA entered into God’s loving arms Saturday, October 17, 2009 at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis, NY after a long battle with Crohn’s Disease. He was 52.

He was born August 18, 1957 in Port Jervis, the son of the late Douglas R. Todd and Joyce Hazen Todd Allen.

He was a member of Elks Lodge No. 645, Port Jervis, a lifetime member of the Port Jervis Fire Department Hose 6 and the Naval Ship in Port Jervis.

A family statement reads: “Jeff was a loving husband, son, brother and uncle. He was a wonderful uncle to all his nieces and nephews and loved his family and friends with all that he had. He loved the Dallas Cowboys and going to Yankee games, listening to the Beatles and relaxing with a book at home. He was a civil war buff. Jeff always said what was on his mind. He loved the outdoors, especially in the fall. He loved to walk with his “Blue Defenders:” certain friends and family members. He enjoyed walking his dog Scottie.”

Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Terri Todd at home; mother Joyce Allen of Matamoras, PA; brother Larry Todd and wife Erma of Sparrowbush, NY; sister Julie Soberg and husband, John of Matamoras; one stepsister; three brothers-in-law; five nieces and nephews; his dog Scottie and his cat Troy; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Douglas R. Todd; grandmother Helen Todd; and stepfather Clifford Allen.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, October 22, at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Matamoras, 209 Ave. H, Matamoras, PA 18336 with Pastor Lora Villinger officiating. Cremation will be at H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg, PA.
