Family memory and mythology
Moran featured at one-night-only event
HIGHLAND LAKE, NY Eden: The Dark Side of Paradise, a night of art installations, projections, junk food and spoken word tunes by Laura E. J. Moran and the Trashy Snack Band, will play for one night only on October 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the NACL Theatre.
Poet and performer Laura E. J. Moran grew up in a middle class, catholic, blue-collar family. Her brother recently converted vintage audio tracks of her family. These recordings of great aunts singing in Portuguese, an uncle and grandfather playing trumpet and saxophone in the big band era hanging backstage, her four-year-old mother laughing, and recordings of her own childhood such as her father telling her how to use a microphone for the first time have been woven into the soundscape of the performance.
Moran said, Often, family memory intertwines with mythology and the big memories are the ones that create a familys moral mapthey define who we are by knowing who we were.
Moran, along with local artist John Roth, has created a distinctive Garden of Eden art installation which precedes the show.
This show is recommended for adults as adult themes are addressed. Admission costs from $8 to $20. All proceeds go to NACL Theatre to support the theatres continuing development of new productions.
