Rewards of tickets, toys
By SANDY LONG
GLEN SPEY, NY Being respectful, responsible and safe at Mackenzie Elementary School these days is the surest way to earn the special tickets that can be turned in for toys under a new program intended to encourage positive behavior.
Also known as The Mackenzie Way, the targeted behaviors are part of a larger program referred to as the Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) rewards system.
The Professional Learning Community (PLC), a group of teachers learning more about educational topics or practices, along with PBIS coaches and other helpers, developed a plan to kick off the rewards program with a store where students cash in their tickets by selecting from toys and school supplies.
The first shopping opportunity occurred last Friday and was greeted with enthusiasm.
The program is being well received by teachers, who are supplied with tickets to award to students whose behavior, particularly during cafeteria and hallway times, is exemplary.
Parent Kim Harripersad, who volunteers at the store, values the concept. Its exciting. My son, Ben, updates me every day on how many tickets he has, she said.
The students like the new program, too. Third graders Cristian Schadt, Chett Kelty and Sawyer Halter said they like the toys. The store is fun, said Halter. I like PBIS. Its making people behave more. Kelty added, PBIS keeps people under control.
