Hinchey presents military medals from World War II

MONTICELLO, NY — Congressman Maurice Hinchey presented eight overdue military medals to Catherine Sterling of Glen Spey, NY on October 9. Catherine is the widow of Wilson B. Sterling, who served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1946 and was stationed at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack on the naval base. The presentation took place in Hinchey’s Monticello office, which is located in the office of Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther.

“These medals have great meaning because they represent the sacrifices and tremendous courage of Wilson Sterling and all of the veterans from World War II,” Hinchey said. “As our nation continues to face challenges abroad, we draw strength from the examples and accomplishments of veterans from past wars such as Wilson Sterling. We are forever grateful for his service to our nation, and I am deeply honored to present these medals to Mrs. Sterling in recognition of her husband’s service to our country.”

Wilson passed away two and a half years ago and never received the medals he earned for his service in the Navy in both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
