‘Art of the New Deal’

HONESDALE, PA — The Wayne County Arts Alliance and the Wayne County Historical Society will present the program “Pennsylvania’s Post Office Art of the New Deal,” illustrated with slides, on Saturday, October 10 at 4:00 p.m. in the Wayne County Historical Society at 810 Main Street.

During the New Deal, thousands of post offices were built. Many received artworks commissioned by the Treasury Department which reflected the heritage of communities for which they were built. The mural above the postmaster’s door in Honesdale portrays the story of the town’s namesake, Philip Hone, and the famous American author Washington Irving. The program will be presented by Pennsylvania Commonwealth speaker David Lembeck.
