Coming Home

By RICHARD A. ROSS

LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY—Homecoming is a chance to return to one’s roots as former students and players return to their high schools to co-mingle and remember the glory days of yore. On October 3, Sullivan West wrapped up its Homecoming weekend with a game against Pine Plains. At halftime, the fans lauded a dozen former football players from the Delaware Valley Eagles and Jeffersonville-Youngsville Trojans, two Sullivan County grid rivals that subsequently combined with Narrowsburg to form the merged Sullivan West school district.

So how important was football to these former players? Powerfully so, it would seem from their comments about what stands out in their memories:

Justin Peake: “It feels good to come home. I’d like to get out there and play again and take on Jeff a little bit.”

Tom Abplanalp: “Rivals! You have no idea. I’d love to put that jersey back on.”

James Kautz: “Sports Illustrated 2000. It was a great year.”

George Hahn: “Broken nose. And it’s still a great game. It’s wonderful to come back after all these years to see the new field and Sullivan West.”
