Night clashes and wide eyes toward post-season bids
By RICHARD A. ROSS
SULLIVAN COUNTY, NYSullivan West grabbed the limelight this week with a trio of night games honoring seniors from its soccer and football teams. An epic cats and dogs neighborhood spat between the Lady Panthers of Monticello and the Lady Bulldogs of Sullivan West on the soccer pitch reached feverish proportions as the Monties came back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game late. Sullivan West won eventually on Katrina Grabys second goal of the night. The girls sit atop Division IV with a league record of 2-0-1 and an overall mark of 6-2. The Lady Dawgs will have tough rematches against Liberty, ONeill and Burke in the coming weeks but should make sectionals barring a collapse.
The night before the girls nocturnal fray, the young boys team fought valiantly but fell to Chapel Field 3-1. Homecoming brought a football game with winless Pine Plains, which figured to be a sleeper. But, it was Sullivan West that slept through the first half and led only 7-6 before coming alive in the second stanza for the 36-14 win. The Westies are 4-1 (3-1 OCIAA).
Eldred pummeled Onteora on the road to stay perfect at 5-0.
Liberty had a dreadful first quarter, then played well but fell to Ellenville 36-6. Tri-Valley and LMR both suffered road losses to Millbrook and Bainbridge-Guilford respectively. Eldred must defeat Chester and LMR in upcoming division tilts to ensure a return to the Section Nine Class D title game, a game they lost to Chester a year ago. Sullivan West has only two league games left against Spackenkill and Tri-Valley to wrap up their Class C playoff entry. Liberty and Tri-Valley are now in must-win scenarios to capture the two remaining spots as undefeated Ellenville is a lock to defend its title.
