Body Chronicles at Catskill Arts Society

LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — The Catskill Art Society will open “Body Chronicles,” a new exhibition featuring the work of artists Valerie Hallier and Joni Wehrli, on Saturday, October 3 at the CAS Arts Center, 48 Main Street. There will be an artists’ talk at 4:00 p.m. and an opening reception from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. The exhibit will run through November 15.

The exhibit will explore a dual meaning of the word “body”—the physical vessel as well as an assembly of objects. Hallier’s work is a photographic catalog of every object accumulated by the artist over 10 years, and questions our collective relationship with consumerism and with the idea of possession. Wehrli’s paintings and watercolors explore bodily movement. Gallery hours are Thursday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The CAS Arts Center is wheelchair accessible.

Beehive Collective on the true costs of coal

LIBERTY, NY — Sullivan Peace & Justice, Catskill Mountainkeeper and Sullivan Alliance for Sustained Development (SASD) will co-sponsor The Beehive Design Collective ((www.beehivecollective.org)), a non-profit, volunteer-driven, political arts organization based in eastern Maine, at the Liberty Free Theatre on Saturday, October 3 at 1:00 p.m. The afternoon will highlight the collective’s presentation of “The True Costs of Coal” and its relevance to the gas drilling controversy affecting eastern Pennsylvania and western New York. The bees create collaborative, hand-illustrated posters which are patchwork “quilts” of personal stories related to them in their travels. Their aim is to “cross-pollinate the grassroots” through the creation of images as a medium for deconstructing and educating the public about complex geopolitical issues.

The theatre is located at 109 South Main Street in Liberty. For more information call 845/2292-3788.

Sample yoga classes and Indian food at Yoga Buffet

MOUNTAINDALE, NY — On the Mat at 63 Main Street will hold a yoga buffet featuring free yoga classes by a variety of Sullivan County instructors, lectures and Indian food on Saturday and Sunday, October 3 and 4. Proceeds will benefit Sullivan County food pantries.

Saturday will kick off at 9:00 a.m. with a beginner’s yoga class, and continue with a chai (Indian spiced tea) and light breakfast, a Kundalini yoga class, Indian lunch, afternoon yoga classes and another chai. There will be an Indian feast from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at 62 Main Street, followed by a concert of inspirational Indian music.

Sunday will feature a similar lineup of classes and meals, but no dinner. The event will close at 3:00 p.m. with an Om meditation.

The charge for morning and afternoon chai and snack is $5, $12 for lunch and $15 for dinner and entertainment. A day pass costs $25 for Saturday and $15 for Sunday.

Three free films on a common threat

LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — Morgan Outdoors at 46 Main Street will host Consider This, a free public showing of three award-winning independent films about environmental issues on Saturday, October 3. “Mountain Top Removal” will be screened at 5:00 p.m., “Red Gold” will be screened at 7:30 p.m. and “A Land Out of Time” will be screened at 8:30 p.m.

Each film brings to life places far from the Northeast. “But the people in the films start to feel like neighbors,” said Lisa Lyons, owner of Morgan Outdoors, the film festival sponsor, “and there’s nothing like a common threat to unite people.” Unlikely allies forge bonds and work together fueled by a human connection to the land and a commitment to fight for the clean water they need to survive.
