One of many broad-winged hawks peers down at observers at Sunrise Mountain on Sept 14. Broad-winged hawks have a distinctive black and white band pattern on the tail. They are also smaller than other buteos such as the red-tailed or red-shouldered hawk.

Broad-winged hawks start their long journey south

At about 9:00 a.m. on a partly cloudy morning at Sunrise Mountain at Stokes State Forest in New Jersey, I spotted the first broad-winged hawk flying low over the ridge. The south-bound hawk gave observers a good look as it was being pushed by the 10-knot northwest breeze.

Wedding bells

On Saturday, September 12 Barb and I were present at the wedding of Jean Gobillot and Per Brandin. Dozens of owners of Brandin rods were present. They came from far and near. The ceremony over, the couple marched out under an arch of bamboo fly rods. The oldest person present was 92-year-old Mrs. Sam Carlson.

Game Commission advises motorists to watch for deer

REGION—Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe today advised motorists to slow down after sundown and before sunrise to reduce their risk of having a close encounter with a white-tailed deer.
