Fiery soccer frays and mighty running define the week

By RICHARD A. ROSS

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — Fire and brimstone were on display as Sullivan West soccer teams took on rival Liberty in back-to-back boys and girls league frays. The pair of games revealed quite a bit about the teams in the early going.

The intense and emotional matchups were fueled by a legacy of years in which each team has acted as the spoiler for the other’s sectional contention. Months of talk preceded the ongoing tempest, last visited when the two teams tied last October, thereby barring Liberty from a sectional berth.

Meanwhile on fields far and wide, Eldred’s cross-country teams visited Monticello on September 15 in another of the David vs. Goliath encounters that define the Yellow Jacket harriers’ strange twist of fate, namely having to run against schools that dwarf it in size instead of those it mirrors in numbers. Great performances by Christine Donnelly, Erika Vorstadt and Regina Davies, as well as those turned in by Hunter Proscia and Alex Campanella, evinced sterling efforts but, as usual, no wins. The girls did finish second in the fray that involved winning Monticello, Liberty and Port Jervis but here are some wacky factoids:

In “dual” meets this season, Eldred must vie against Class AA Warwick, Minisink Valley, Class A Monticello (three times), Port Jervis (twice), Class B Liberty three times, Class C Sullivan West twice and Tri-Valley twice while never running against division foes Chester, Chapel Field or S.S. Seward. Many of those “dual” meets feature four or five schools, not two. Eldred has no home meets all season. In no other sport would a Class D team vie against a Class AA team.

Somebody call 911, Varsity 845, Section 9 or some other key number to rectify this travesty.

Eldred’s Hunter Proscia (16:28.68) finished third in the four-team “dual” meet at Monticello on September 15 against the Monties, Liberty and Port Jervis. The fact that Eldred only vies against bigger schools, including Class AA Warwick and Minisink Valley, is a schedule anomaly that denies Yellow Jackets wins and leads to a losing record despite stellar individual efforts. Christine Donnelly had the early lead but was overtaken by Class A Monticello’s Emily Martin, Anna Loor and Krissy Harrington. The Montie trifecta was impressive but it shouldn’t have overshadowed Donnelly’s fine run (22:06). (Click for larger version)

Liberty’s Ben Grisafe goes skyward to rocket a ball by the head of Sullivan West’s Lucas Bauer (front right). Liberty won the hard-fought league fray 2-0. Last year, Liberty won the first match 1-0 and tied the second 0-0 with their county rival. (Click for larger version)

Sullivan West’s Shelby Grishaber, left, drives the ball down and to the right by Liberty keeper Taylir Lorino and defender Jeni Stolow for the go-ahead goal in Sullivan West’s 2-1 league win over Liberty. The two teams share one of the most incendiary rivalries in the region. They have taken turns knocking each other out of sectional contention. Last year, it was SW that did it to Liberty in payback for the year before when the Lady Indians barred the Ladies of the West. The rivalry is not blunted by the fact that girls from both teams join forces on Liberty United’s club team in the offseason and some are good friends. But once the whistle blows, forget the warm and fuzzy feelings. It’s all-out war. (Click for larger version)

In a dramatic sequence, Liberty’s Jovaughn Clark goes up behind Eldred’s Bryan Henry to tip the ball to himself and then take off for a big gain. Clark would later return a kickoff 85 yards for Liberty’s only score. Henry rushed for three TDs and threw for two more as Eldred prevailed 39-8 in the non-league clash. (Click for larger version)
