DOUGLAS CLARENCE CONKLIN

Douglas Clarence Conklin of Damascus, PA, died Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY. He was 66.

He was the son of the late Clarence E. and Mabel Williams Conklin, and was born at Bridgeport, CT on Aug. 21, 1943. He was married to Jill Paskiewicz Conklin.

He was a patient advocate at the Landman House at Crystal Run Health care for 15 years and a former member of the Tusten Lions Club, Narrowsburg, NY.

Douglas is survived by his wife, Jill Paskiewicz Conklin at home; son Peter Conklin and wife Mary of Bristol, CT; sister Alberta Hillriegel and husband Reginald of Callicoon, NY; brother Clarence E. Conklin Jr. and wife Barbara of Leonardtown, MD; grandsons Austin, Aiden and Ryan Conklin; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held on Saturday September 5, 2009, at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home, Callicoon.

Burial was in Lyons Plain Cemetery in Lyons Plain, CT.

WALTER A. DAHL

Walter A. Dahl of Milford, PA died Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at Belle Reve Rehab Center, Milford, after an eight-month battle with glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer. He was 52.

He was born April 29, 1957 in Garfield, NJ, the son of Walter Alfred and the late Eilleen F.(Brannon) Dahl Jr.

A family statement reads: “Walter called himself a carpenter but for all who knew him and his work, he was a restoration expert and a true craftsman. His handiwork could be seen in the pages of Architectural Digest, The New York Times, at Radio City Music Hall and other venues and homes too numerous to list.”

Survivors include his father, Walter A. Dahl, Jr. of Port Jervis and Toms River, NJ; sons Thomas Dahl and his mother Teri Michaels of Phoenix, AZ and Sean Dahl of Blooming Grove, NY; daughter Victoria “Tori” Dahl of Shohola, PA; brothers Donald Dahl of Milford, Douglas and David Dahl, both of Port Jervis; sisters Deborah Heine and husband Jeffrey of Mt. Hope, NY, and Donna Hild and longtime companion Richard Martin of Port Jervis; one niece; Vanessa Hinkley of Westbrookville, NY; nephew Courtney Hild and wife Kimber and sons Grant and Hayden of Colbert, GA; close friends Van Pisarri of Milford, Michael “Mickey” Hopkins of Port Jervis and Al Peters of Matamoras, PA.

He was predeceased by his mother, Eileen; sister Eileen Mary Dahl; and stepmother Mary Marquez of Toms River.

To honor Walt’s wishes, there was no visitation or funeral services. Cremation was at H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg.

Interment was to be at the Milford Cemetery at a later date.

CARLA DOOLITTLE

Carla Doolittle of Damascus, PA and 20 West 64th Street, New York City, died on September 4, 2009 at Calvary Hospital after a period of declining health.

She leaves behind her step-mother, Rose Doolittle; companion Edward Wezowicz; aunt Miriam Balrenburg; several cousins; and many wonderful friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, Wesley and Doris Doolittle.

Carla was involved with Raw Space on 42nd Street and managed the executive dining rooms for Kawasaki and Sony in New York City. She owned Doolittle’s Cafe in Nyack, NY and was on the board of directors of Way Off Broadway in Honesdale, PA, the board of directors of the Women’s Auxiliary of Wayne Memorial Hospital and was also involved in real estate in Pennsylvania and New York City. She will be remembered for her many charitable works, love of animals, generous spirit, kind heartedness and loving ways.

The calling hours will be held at Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, Port Jervis, NY on Thursday, September 10 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The memorial service will be held on Friday, September 11 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Stephen Huston officiating.


DORIS JOHANSON

Doris Johanson of Lackawaxen, PA, a housewife and longtime resident of the area, passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2009. She was 88.

The daughter of the late Edward and Matilda Strubing Thonning, she was born July 2, 1921 in New York City.

Doris was a member of St. Ann’s R.C. Church, Shohola, PA.

Doris is survived by nine children, Judith McDevitt, Kathaleen Beisel, Patricia McCue, Denise Steuh, Frank Johanson, James Johanson, Christine Flynn, Mary Beisel and Tina Augella; one brother, Ambrose Thonning; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her husband, Frank Johanson, who died in 1993.

PAUL R. MARTIN

Paul R Martin of Sparrowbush, NY died August 30, 2009, at Orange Regional Medical Center, Horton Campus. He was 51.

He was born in Matamoras, PA on January 15, 1958 to Raymond C. and Pauline Romaine Martin.

Paul loved fishing, camping and the outdoors. His greatest love and commitment was his two daughters, and dirt track racing, introduced to him by his loving father.

Paul is survived by his wife, Dorothy Cusano Martin; daughters Shanon and Cora at home; brothers Phillip and wife Lynn of Pine Bush, NY, Peter of Kiamesha Lake, NY and Michael of Montgomery, NY; sister Susan Maitner and husband Jack of Boca Raton, FL; several nieces, nephews; an aunt and two cousins.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 8, at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., Middletown. Cremation will be private and at the convenience of the family.


JULIANNA SIMONET

Julianna Simonet of Narrowsburg, NY, a dental assistant and a longtime area resident, died on Saturday, September 5, 2009 in a car accident in Narrowsburg. She was 31.

The daughter of the late Richard John Noble and Marie Noble, she was born March 31, 1978 in Miami, FL.

Julianna was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Narrowsburg, NY. She was an assistant coach for AYSO soccer.

A family statement reads: “Julianna was a terrific and loving wife, mother, daughter and sister. She was like a shooting star, she shined very brightly and for too short of a time! She will greatly be missed by her family and all that knew her.”

Survived by her husband, Jason Simonet; children Jordan and Cameron Sullivan; stepdaughters Haley and Hannah Simonet; mother Marie Noble; paternal grandmother Dora Noble, her maternal grandmother Julia Nahay; brothers Rick Noble, Scotty Nonie and Nicholas Char1es Noble; mother- and father-in-law Nancy and Jeffrey Simonet; and numerous uncles and aunts.

Julianna is predeceased by her father, Richard John Noble.

Friends are invited to call on Thursday. September 10 from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Friday, September 11 from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, Narrowsburg, NY. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 11 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Narrowsburg. Cremation will follow at Maple Hill Crematory, Archbald, PA.


JOYCE ELAINE SONDERLAND

Joyce Elaine Sonderland of Honesdale, PA passed away peacefully at Allied Skilled Nursing Center in Scranton, PA on September 2. She was 73.

She was born in Jersey City, NJ on October 16, 1935, the daughter of the late Emil and Dorothy (Schmidt) Sonderland.

She was a graduate of Union Hill High School in Union City, New Jersey. Joyce was employed for 35 years with EXXON Corporation in New York City and Floral Park, NJ. After retirement Joyce worked at several part-time jobs both in New Jersey and Honesdale and was a devoted volunteer at the Wayne County Library in Honesdale. She was an avid reader, and when her eyesight failed she turned to books on tape and CDs. She made many new friends traveling with the Wayne Bank’s Our Crowd.

Joyce is survived by her sisters Carol and husband Frank Olsen, Beach Lake, PA and Dee and husband Raymond Morris of Rottingdean, England; nieces and nephews Elaine and Anthony Piccinich, Peter Olsen, David and Ernie Aguilar, Gareth and Rhiannon Morris; and great nieces and nephew.

Per her wishes, Joyce was cremated without viewing. Contributions may be made to the Wayne County Library, Honesdale, PA or charity of choice.


KARL E. TIEDEMANN

Karl E. Tiedemann of Eldred, NY, a maintenance foreman for the Federal Reverse Bank in New York City and a long-time resident of the area, passed away Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at home. He was 81.

The son of the late Julius and Katharina Meyer Tiedemann, he was born May 17, 1928 in Germany.

Karl was a Mason. He was a member of the Highland Seniors Club. A family statement reads, “Karl was a loving husband. He was an overall nice guy, good person and a great friend to many. He will greatly be missed by his wife and his friends.”

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Grete Prigge Tiedemann, at home; and many cousins in Germany.

Karl is predeceased by two brothers.

ANTHONY THOMAS ‘TONY’ TUFANO

The Hon. Anthony Thomas “Tony” Tufano of Huguenot, NY, a lifetime area resident, passed away Saturday, August 29, 2009 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He was 71.

He was born July 2, 1938 in Port Jervis, NY, the son of the late Alfred and the late Pauline Ritzel Tufano.

Tony served in the United States Marine Corp. during the Korean War. He retired from Orange & Rockland, where he worked in the forestry department. He was a past police chief in the Town of Deerpark for many years and until his death the judge for the Town of Deerpark, where he had served for seven years. He also served as vice chairman of the community advisory board for the Otisville federal and state prisons.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Margaret “Peggy” Tufano at home; son Mark Tufano and wife Alicia of Glen Spey; daughters Tina Klimkiewicz and husband Mark of Matamoras, PA and Jody Ritchie and husband Jim of Huguenot; brothers John Tufano and wife Joyce of Vienna, VA and Alfred Tufano of Port Jervis; sisters Mary Ann Morgan of Walden and Rosemarie Merlino of Walden; grandchildren Marissa Ritchie, Haley Tufano, Bryonna Klimkiewicz and Jared Ritchie; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is predeceased by his sister Joanne; and his brother Joseph.

Funeral services were held on Friday, September 4 at the Drew United Methodist Church, Port Jervis, with Rev. Robert D. Cassidy officiating. Burial with Military Honors was made at Rural Valley Cemetery, Cuddebackville, NY.
