Visiting firemen invited to exhibit

HONESDALE, PA — The Wayne County Historical Society will invite the visiting firemen of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Firemen’s Federation to visit the new “Fire! Fire! History of Fire Fighting in Wayne County” exhibit, housed in the recently opened John and Helen Villaume Wing of the society’s museum at 810 Main Street. All firemen in uniform or with official card will be admitted free to the museum during the Federation’s convention, hosted by Hose Co. No. 1 of Honesdale on September 11 and 12.

The museum has also extended its hours on Saturday, September 12, and will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Regular hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

Callicoon Center band documentary, logging footage in historical society presentation

HURLEYVILLE, NY — The Sullivan County Historical Society will present Alice Elliott and her documentary, “The Callicoon Center Band,” at 2:00 p.m. on September 14 at the Sullivan County Museum. It will also show never- before-screened archival footage of early 20th-century logging in Sullivan County. A teacher at NYU film school and Academy Award-nominated director, Elliott will show and tell about historical documentaries, talk about ways to use documents and archival material to story tell, and how to use digital media in service to your story. Audience members are invited to bring a DVD they would like to share. The society will try to show quick excerpts from such DVDs, with a limit of 60 seconds per DVD.

Arts & Heritage Grants fund youth programming at CAS

LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — The Catskill Art Society (CAS) has received a $1,500 grant that helped to support multi-disciplinary youth programming that was presented this past August at the CAS Arts Center. This project was made possible in part by a Sullivan County Arts & Heritage Grant funded by the Sullivan County Legislature. Funding was used to support two youth initiatives: two performances of the International Young Artists of Shandelee Music Festival on Wednesday, August 12 featuring solo pianists between the ages of 14 -29; and two performances of ACT UP! Teen Theater in an original, live radio play entitled Venus Fly Trap, written and directed by Ramona Jan, on Friday, August 21 & Saturday, August 22, featuring student performers ages 13 to 16 from Sullivan West, Livingston Manor, Ellenville and the Honesdale, PA area.

‘The Many-Splendored Songs of Sammy Fain’

HIGHLAND LAKE, NY — “The Many-Splendored Songs of Sammy Fain,” part of The Sullivan County Bicentennial Celebration, will be presented at the NACL Theatre on Saturday, September 12 at 8:00 p.m.

Fain grew up in Fallsburg. He wrote hundreds of songs and dozens of blockbusters, many Broadway shows, scores of successful movies and was the recipient of two Oscars. The performance is a two-hour show with an intermission. Fain’s music will be performed by Tom Caltabellotta, Amanda Speer, Mariano Vidal and Julie Ziavras, singers, Jake Lentz, pianist and Chris Farlekas, narrator.

Tickets cost $10, $8 for seniors.

Baptist church holds Wonderfaire

PORT JERVIS, NY — The First Baptist Church, 34 East Main Street, will hold its 12th annual Wonderfaire on Saturday, September 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The fair is free, and is open to Port Jervis and surrounding communities.

There will be game booths, jousting, an obstacle course and other inflatables, pony rides, a dunk tank, food, craft-making, face-painting, a practical “community helps” booth, gift cards, a Prayer Balloon Release for our country and for personal needs and much more. Ringside events include an illusionist, drama and special music.

Builders hold third annual Lego contest

LAKE WALLENPAUPACK, PA —The Wayne County Builders Association’s Home Expo, which runs from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 10 and 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 11, will host the third annual Children’s Building Contest beginning at 1:00 p.m. October 10. The event will be held at the Wallenpaupack High School on Route 6.

The contest, sponsored by All About Improving of Beach Lake, will give kids ages five through 12 an opportunity to have some fun, build a LEGO home and win prizes. There will be two age groups set up, one for five- to eight-year-olds and one for nine- to 12-year-olds.

The registration deadline is October 5. Parents can pick up pre-registration forms at the Wayne County Builders Association or Clemleddy Construction (both located in the Palmyra Professional Complex on Shook Road in Hawley), the main branch of the Honesdale National Bank and Wayne Bank on Route 6 in Hawley.
