Murray creates a dreamscape at The Loft

NARROWSBURG, NY — “Armchair Artist,” a sculptural installation by Julia Helen Murray, opens at the Loft Gallery at 37 Main Street on Friday, September 4, with an artist’s reception from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The exhibit will be on view through September 26.

“The work in this installation uses materials with several meanings,” said Arlington, VA native and recent Narrowsburg resident Julia Helen Murray, who transforms the Loft Gallery into a daydream landscape complete with hand-constructed armchairs, Astroturf carpeting and painted tree branches.

“The armchairs are symbolic of me, the artist, with molds of my hands and feet attached to the chair to create intimacy and perhaps a stronger feeling that you are in the created space,” Murray said. “The chairs are also symbolic of the idea of the ‘Armchair Artist.’ Like an ‘Armchair Architect,’ someone who is not a professional but might design and build a building, an armchair artist makes art occasionally, or as a supplement to another job.”

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For more information visit ArtsAllianceSite.org or call 845/252-7576.
