First Fridays welcomes Derrick Brown and DJ Renegade
NARROWSBURG, NY Western Sullivan Public Librarys First Fridays Contemporary Writers Series will host authors Derrick Brown and DJ Renegade on September 4 at the Tusten-Cochecton branch on Bridge Street. There will be an open mic starting at 7:30, and the visiting authors will perform starting at 8:00 p.m.
Derrick Brown, former paratrooper for the 82nd Airborne, gondolier, magician and fired weatherman, is known for a show that incorporates spoken word, minimalist music and even sound effects. He has consistently been the opening act for Indie rock act Cold War Kids, and has been booked with The White Stripes and performed with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Among the venues where he has performed are The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, La Sorbonne in Paris and The Nuyorican Poets Café in NYC.
DJ Renegade works as a poet, performer and creative writing instructor. His poetry has appeared in The Washington Post, George Washington Review, Revival: Spoken Word from Lollapalooza (Manic D Press, 1999), and the award-winning video documentary Voices Against Violence, which he helped to write. Winner of the Furious Flower Emerging Poet award in 1995 from James Madison University, he is the reigning National Haiku Slam Champion for the second year in a row.
